Has Anyone on Jeopardy! Ever Wagered $420?

You know. For the lulz.

Today a guy wagered

$5

I’m guessing anyone who was in a state where they’d find that humorous wouldn’t have won the money to wager.

I’ve seen some dumbasses bid $420 for an Item Up For Bid (IUFB) on The Price is Right. There was one moron who bid $420 on an IUFB, $69 for another IUFB, and $2,000,000 on another. The $2 million bid wasn’t meant to be his real bid for that item, but by that point, Drew Carey had had enough of the guy’s bullshit, and the bid stood.

In Ken Jennings book brainiac, he mentions that one of the people he played against smoked a bowl or two before the show to help the guy relax. He didn’t do well.

For this non-American who has never watched Jeopardy! (but has a reasonable understanding of how the game works), can anyone explain the significance of the $420 figure?

It is a term referring to the pot-smoking subculture. I think it is a time reference, such as, toking up at 4:20 in the afternoon .

It’s also Adolph Hitler’s birthday, so there’s always the ambiguity as to whether you’re a stoner or neo-Nazi.

I’ve seen people bet $0 or sub-$100 on Final Jeopardy. Usually runaways where they were just barely double the next player’s total, and clearly had no confidence in the category.

Here’s one guy from the Bob Barker days, with the guy bidding $420 repeatedly (well, almost. He alters his plan on the second item, bidding $1420. The irony of this is he would have won, had he stuck with his $420 plan.)

This guy’s wager was really leet.
