Can you perform this simple, common feat?

I can’t do the one with two fingertips stuck between the lips, but I can produce a very loud whistle by holding the thumb-tips and forefinger-tips of both hands together to create a diamond-shaped aperture, and then holding that against my lips.

Same here. When I was little and my brothers whistled while I couldn’t, I used to wish I were a boy. Then whistling sisters came along…

For those who can whistle, this is a good one to know.

I can whistle. Most people tell me I can’t carry a tune though.

That I can do.

I can “just put my lips together… and blow” that’s suitable for whistling tunes, but have never been able to do the “two fingers in the mouth” whistle that’s really loud and carries a long way.

I can whistle, but I learned how to fairly late - like early 20s or so. I can sometimes carry a tune, but not really well or with any recognizability. My brother’s a whistling fiend, though, and it drives me bananas. I want to whistle like that.

It appears I now have another trick to teach myself, along with raising my left eyebrow. (I can do the right, no prob.)

Yes, I can whistle and I can also sing.
I taught myself to whistle on the breath in as well as the breath out and then learned to do circular breathing and that came in handy when I learned to play a didgeridoo.
I understand that circular breathing comes in handy when playing a bagpipe, but I haven’t gone that crazy … yet.

I find myself whistling my own music at times when I am working.
I do so often enough that others here at the lab have mentioned it (as in, here comes Dr. Inexplicable… I can hear his racket from down the hall!)

I can whistle a “tune,” but not especially well.

I can, my sister cannot. It’s something to do with her physical make-up, as far as we can tell.

I’m a self crowned professional whistler.
I can do the hand cup whistle (The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly tune is always a favorite).
I can whistle inhaling and exhaling
I can do the loud whistle similar to the two fingers in the mouth thing.
I can whistle with a leaf or a blade of grass.
However I CANNOT whistle using my fingers in an O shape inserted into my mouth.

I can hold a tune exhaling and inhaling, also blades of grass between thumbs. I never mastered the cupped hand thing or the loud fingers in one - but I can do the small shell between the knuckles!

I don’t remember ever not being able to whistle a tune. My 11-year-old son wants me to teach him, and I have no idea how to explain it to someone else.

I feel like a failure, however, for not being able to stick two fingers in my mouth and whistle really loud.

I can, and can carry a tune also. They tell me I’m also a really good singer for what that’s worth; maybe it’s coincidence or maybe it’s a matter of having good throat/mouth control, who knows.

Can’t do the two fingers thing either. But thanks to a gap between my upper incisors I can make a chirping sound like a cricket.

Ditto.

I can’t whistle a tune (I also can’t carry a tune - wonder if the two are related?), but I can physically whistle.

I can occasionally whistle a few notes, but nothing recognizable. I’ve never been able to. Of course, this may be a similarity to the fact that I am also incapable of blowing bubbles with gum. Don’t know why. If I blow hard enough to start a bubble, I end up spitting the gum out instead. :frowning:

I thought I could whistle.

Upon reading this, I tried it. Seems that I can whistle fine while inhaling, but not while blowing. I guess this is why I also can’t do the loud-ass fingers in the mouth thing. (Though I have been trying it for about four minutes now. No dice.)

I can also do the higher pitched whistle through the teeth move, but I don’t like it.

I also don’t like whistling in general. My roommate does it while she putzes around the place, and I don’t like it. Gets on my nerves right quick.

Yeah, its pretty catchy. Try to whistle all the parts at the same time.

I can make a whistling sound, but can’t control the tone at all. My father loathes all whistling sounds, and they were banned in my house, so maybe I missed some critical period of whistle development.
