I want to buy a ladder. I have no way to get a ladder from the store to my house. “But wait!” you say, “they have a delivery service! Problem solved.” Well, that’s true, they do have a delivery service, but it costs $45 to deliver a $45 ladder. So I figure my best bet is to get a set of roof racks. Then I could get an $80 ladder, and also have the racks for future use.
Can anyone tell me how much they cost, whether there are types you’d recommend over others, and etc.? We have a 2004 Dodge Neon. I’ve looked at the indentations on the inside of the door frame on the roof where it looks like racks would attach. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of clearance once the door is closed, for a piece of metal to be coming out. Does this car require racks with a specific kind of mounting bracket? Any information will be appreciated.
Just take along some rope and old towels and duct tape. Wrap the towels around the rungs that come in contact with the roof, tie that sucker down securely and you’re good to go. Save the money on roof racks to buy your vacation home in the Bahamas.
Skip the rack. A good rack (such as Yakima - really popular in this part of the world) will set you back $229 for your Neon. What you get for this price is the clips, brackets, and whatnots to securely hold the two crossbars high enough to clear the curve of the roof. Any further items are ala carte and nearly endless in option - skis, bikes, surfboards, big baskets, big “coffin” enclosed cases, etc.
Got a blanket you don’t care super-highly about? Wrap the ladder in it and tie it to the car. Don’t forget to tie front and back of the ladder to strong points on the car - bumpers probably aren’t strong enough on this car, so look underneath for tow points.
