Can you vote without registering?

A co-worker of mine is bummed because she neglected to register to vote before the deadline and really would like to do so.

Can you still vote if you show-up at a precinct with appropriate identification and proof you live in that precinct? If so does anyone know what all would be required by the election officials to allow the person to vote?

Thanks in advance…

No. She’s SOL.

Actually, that is not true. Believe it or not, North Dakaota does not require voters to be register at all.

Here is a list of all the states voter registration deadlines.

It depends. If your friend was registered in a different precinct in the city of Chicago, and she is STILL in the city itself, she may be able to vote in the federal elections. I just had a conversation with my sister about this yesterday (she’s an election judge), but I can’t remember what EXACTLY she has to do. Either way, she won’t be able to vote in the local elections.

Sorry I can’t help any more than that.

Oh, also, your friend can call the Board of Elections to find out what ID she needs. The number in Chicago is (312) 269-7900.

In Minnesota, they have election-day registration (which is what is largely credited with Jesse (“The Guv”) Ventura’s election as Governor. There, all you needed was a photo ID showing an address within the precinct, or a registered voter to vouch for you.

It varies from state to state, and it would be worthwhile for you to give the Board of Elections in your locality a call in order to clarify matters.

mm

Thanks for all the help guys and a special BIG thanks to Valerie for digging up that phone number (I probably would have been too lazy to do it myself)!

Later…

I was watching C-Span the other night (I know, I’m a big dork) and Jesse Ventura and Ralph Nader were speaking with Ted Koppel. Jesse Ventura actually took some time out to stress that he believes the whole country should have a same-day registration system and that would lead to greater voter turn-out, especially in young folks. Hmmm… actually, not a bad idea says I.
