I’ve got the CTV News Channel on, and just learned this. Thanks, NP, for starting the thread.
Yes, a very short election campaign. We’re used to short ones, and while this one may be a little shorter than the last few ones, it’s going to be interesting to see how the candidates make the best use of the time.
Hard to say. The Tories have been trying to trigger an election for the last half-year, so they must have their finances lined up. Liberals are generally in a good spot.
The NDP is apparently short of cash and that was one of the reasons they were willing to support the Trudeau ministry. If they can’t afford a major campaign, my bet is that some of their votes go to the Liberals.
Bloc only runs in Quebec; not sure how the Trump threats will play out against Quebec sovereignty. There may be a bit of a push towards the Liberals there, but who knows?
Greens are unlikely to improve their standings, and in a crisis, their voters may abandon them as an unaffordable luxury.
Not really. Although some provinces are more conservative or religious. Many Canadians live close to the border, and these Canadians are often particularly annoyed.
Which is going to likely force Danielle Smith & Scott Moe to be quiet as their style is to do as much Neville Chamberlaining to the Tepublicans as possible. They’re all pissy because Carney isn’t brown nosing with them but rather establishing new trading partners who are interested in what Canada has to offer now that the US suddenly does not.
I still think Polivere is likely to get a minority or razor thin majority but the most interesting thing will be how much Doug Fords vocal Trump bashing plays against Polivers style.
And the “people’s party” is probably the most Pro US followed by the Conservatives themselves.
Not saying it would happen but could the Republican party stand for election? When would they have to put forward their candidates?
If Trump is convinced Canada would be better off as the 51st State and Canadians know they will lose a trade war then he must surely be convinced the Republicans, on a Unionist ticket would get a majority to get his way. The only way that wouldn’t happen is if the election is rigged against him.
While our day-to-day politics can be defined by pro/anti-US terms, it’d be pretty vapid if a party defined itself in that metric (either pro or anti). It’s just not a meaty enough of an issue for a party to take a stance (that is; until Trump made this election a referendum about him). Americans are our neighbours, we MUST live with them. Neither of us are going anywhere else. That said…
The Liberals tend to be the ones who wrap themselves in the flag in rallying nationalism. They even are arrogantly called “the naturally governing party of Canada”. This done because they are elected most often, for longer, and tend to both defend and establish our national institutions (the CBC, our Maple Leaf flag, our Constitution, certain national policies like bilingualism, or multiculturalism, or gun control). The Liberals are also most likely to break with the US in matters of War (Vietnam, and Irag, where the ruling Liberals said “no thanks”), or trade (NAFTA was a Tory initiative).
So you might now say that this makes the Conservatives pro-US? Well… yes, but not historically. Before the current CPC, the Conservatives were represented by people who came from the old Tory tradition. This didn’t exactly mean pro-US, but pro-British, and anything relating to Canada’s British traditions and links. The current CPC is of a different nature thou. They represent a newer more American (as in local, new-world, not USA) Conservatism. This often resembles much the same values of the US Republican party, but with a Canadian flavour.
Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the CPC (Conservative Party of Canada), and our official opposition. PP is the shorten form, and PeePee is the derogative form.
I prefer paper boy for Poliever …Pee Pee very juvenile and PP not far off tho better.
He really turned me away when he gave up wearing glasses which from his squint he really needs and it would have given him “professorial” air.
Abandoning that seemed very juvenile and populist and removed any gravitas he might have carried.
FWIW

What gives? Most [studies show]
That people who wear glasses appear more honest, trustworthy, intelligent, of higher social class and less threatening than those who don’t.
But that data doesn’t necessarily hold with conservative voters.
For me it went to “shifty” even tho I knew his Harper ( who I hated ) affinities early on.
I’d say he shot himself in the foot.
Initialization of PP isn’t meant to be derogate,.. unless it is. I use it, as I use JT for Trudeau. PeePee, however, is clear.
Personally, I’ll just say that I can’t wait for PP to lose. He’s an unethical, one note, convoy-loving, smarmy, tight-righty.
He represents my riding, and I had the pleasure of voting against him in every election for the past 10 years. We almost got rid of him in 2015, but I lost hope when he became leader of the CPC. Now, thou. I have hope again.
My friend. The Liberal leadership race is over. Has been for weeks. Mark Carney (the favourite) won. He’s our current Prime Minister, and he has now called a general election to secure a mandate from Canadians.
Our choice is between Liberals, Conservatives, or one of the other parties: NDP, Bloc, Green.
