Canada: GovGen dissolves Parliament, Carney drops the writ, and the election is on!

This just in: Trump endorses a Candidate for Prime Minister, but forgets to tell us which one.

"Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses, QUADRUPLE in size, WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st. State of the United States of America.

“No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Look how beautiful this land mass would be. Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES WITH NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE! America can no longer subsidize Canada with the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year that we have been spending in the past. It makes no sense unless Canada is a State!”

What To Know

It is not clear which candidate Trump was referring to in the Truth Social post; both Carney and Poilievre have repeatedly denounced any suggestion of Canada becoming a U.S. state.

What is that note on the bottom? Is someone seriously suggesting that this deranged rant might be an endorsement of Carney?

I mean, I would accept “Trump has forgotten who the candidates are,” but he’s clearly not supporting the Liberals.

What’s left on your phone when your rejected ex drunk calls you.

I think they were trying for sarcasm, but it’s sometimes hard to tell these days.

I’ve never seen one. The results are known so quickly that I don’t think there would be much point.

His statement is clearly not referring to anyone in the actual race. Newsweek is just doing the usual negligent journalism thing that’s so common these days where they pretend to take something Trump said as if it were serious, and say BS like “it’s not clear who he was endorsing” when it’s crystal clear that he’s not endorsing anyone.

Actually, as statements like this have been helping out the Liberals immensely, one might argue that Trump is supporting the Liberals. Aside from the fact that he’s a lunatic who isn’t capable of understanding how much he’s been hurting the Conservatives, that is.

He has a long history of backing people who are already ahead in elections so he can claim it’s because of him they won.

I think Trump has no idea how the election system works, he thinks we’re electing the prime minister directly and we could just write-in the name “Donald Trump” on our ballots, like they can in the States.

When he finds out tomorrow that he got zero write-in ballots in his name, he will claim the election was fixed.

Just back from casting my vote, lovely temperate sunny spring day, a 5 minute walk to the polling station, a 1 minute wait in line. The polling clerk mentioned that turn-out so far was light, but expected it would get busy from 4 PM on.

The polling station is in the library of a public school, on a poster board in the hallway was a display of student agamograph artworks, I’ve seen such before but today learned the name for it.

In addition: the USA has betrayed Canada. People are likely to be a lot more pissed at a close friend who betrays them than they are at someone who’s been clearly a rival all along.

On Election Day I can only vote at one polling station in New York State/USA.

For early voting in person I can also only vote at one station; though it’s a different one about twice as far away. (Small county, early voting only at the county seat.)

Did he forget, or does he want to claim, whoever wins, that the win is due to his endorsement?

I think he just straight-up forgot. The notion that he could be talking about anyone running for the Liberals, the NDP, the Greens, or the Bloc is just ludicrous. I suppose he might have been thinking about the PPC, but I’d be surprised if he even knows they exist. Regardless of whether or not you think PP and the CPC would actually sell out Canada to Trump, it’s pretty obvious that Trump thinks they will, since they’ve basically cut-and-pasted 90% of his electioneering homework, and PP allies have gone to Trump to kiss the ring.

I just finished voting. Traffic was steady, but light. I asked the woman at the polling station how the turnout was. She said told me it wasn’t busy at all because so many people voted in advance. When she turned to the page my name was on, half the names had already been stroked off when the sheet was printed.

Overall, took me less than 5 minutes. Everyone else in my family (wife and sons) already voted in advance. I didn’t because I enjoy being part of the event.

I told my oldest son that if the Liberals win, I’ll take everyone out for dinner tomorrow. If the Liberals win AND Poilievre loses his seat, then it will be unlimited drinks on me! I would be so delighted to see a Liberal majority plus Poilievre losing his seat. I despise that man and his messaging…

Well, I voted. I read somewhere that advance voting last week had hit record numbers, and today seems to have borne this out – for the first time in my memory, there was actually a queue lined up (and, natch, the longest line by far was in my particular poll district). I was probably in line for around 15 minutes, which for me is a record. But I feel virtuous for having done my civic duty, both by voting, and by voting for the right candidate!

It’ll be interesting watching the results. This is a riding where the Conservative candidate always wins, but maybe this time with a narrower margin, and it would be delightful if the Liberal wins. It would be especially delightful if the Liberal wins by 1 vote!

Theoretically Musk could vote in South African elections too (which allow overseas voting regardless of residence). But I doubt very much if he has ever done so.

There are 4 people in my family. We all voted Liberal. So I guess I’d enjoy it if the Liberals won our riding by 4 or less…

NOOO!!! We wanted the left candidate!

You know, the banker guy

Exactly! Left is right!

I never thought I would agree with the political opinion of a fly. Or that a fly would have one!

I showed up at the poll just buzzing with enthusiasm…

I was speaking with the ex-wife earlier today. She runs a small business and I’ve always known her to have small-c conservative leanings. When I told her I was about to go out to vote, she said “I hope you’re voting Liberal”. Apparently her views have changed since way back in the Harper era.

But provincially, I still like Doug Ford. I think of him as a jolly fat guy who gives me free money, like canceling annual vehicle registration fees and sending me a cheque for $200 for no particular reason. Hey, I can be bribed!

Seriously, the guy managed the COVID crisis very well and has been one of the most adamant anti-Trump forces around here.
