NO. ‘Global warming’ was a media term for what scientists call ‘climate change’.
It involves more extreme temperatures (warmer in summer colder in winter), more storms (tornadoes, hurricanes, ‘hundred-year’ rainstorms) more often & more violent, and semi-permanent weather changes in areas (constant droughts, even desert-ification of parts of the western USA).
…and our furnace died on Christmas Eve, the furnace guy said the control board had gone, the manufacturer of the furnace went under about a year ago, the usual supplier in town is closed due to a covid outbreak, and they hope to get a new one to us tomorrow-ish… yay us?
Fortunately it’s only -5C or so in our bit of Southern Ontario. Piles of blankets, electric heaters, and warm fuzzy clothing are doing the trick. Plus closing off the bedrooms when we’re not actually in them, and retreating to the kitchen/living room. And then cooking stuff.
Looks like the cold is going to miss us in the east. The two-week forecast doesn’t go below a nightly low of -11C.
Strange. Here in southwestern Ontario the temperature struggles and fails to get below freezing. Well above, straight through to the New Year. New Year’s Day forecast? 7°C (45°F for youse 'Murrikans) and rain.
If you pay me enough I’ll come down there and pay for a snowplowing service, and that will get you the same weather! I have magic powers – anything I prepare for never happens, especially if it’s expensive.
I went out and did some snowblowing yesterday in that weather, and when I got back in I immediately ordered some heated gloves. Even with my thickest snowboarding gloves, by the time I was done I couldn’t feel my fingers. It was scary cold.
Lytton (named after the same guy the Bulwer-Lytton bad writing contest is named after) had the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada during that heat wave 6 months ago. But that wasn’t hot enough for them, so the next day, they burned the town down.*
*OK, I’m taking some liberties with the facts here, but it’s funnier that way.
Where I live, it’s supposed it hit -20F/-29C tomorrow night. Well, good heavens, you’d think we never had these temperatures before by how the media goes on. But of course we have. When I was a dumb kid, we would go out skating in this cold. Not for long, and there were warming houses available, but we still had fun with it. I expect frozen pants to be standing in people’s yards this weekend. Maybe there won’t be so many fireworks tonight. One can hope…
No, because “Global Warming” could actually trigger the next Ice Age. It has to do with the desalinization of ocean water due to melting ice, which in turn would slow and eventually stop the “conveyor belt” currents that balance out the ocean temperature zones. This whole issue is extremely complex. It’s more than simply, “everything gets hot”.
