Trudeau’s response to the trump trade war is well worth watching for the 14 minutes it takes. You can speed through where he speaks French, but those are worthwhile as it’s a paraphrase with additional messaging and not simply an English translation.
Salute. And in the paraphrase Barney: “I’m with you Canada, fight the power.”
This is the type of speech that US American’s think that we give and stand for. Maybe we did at one point, but not in the trump DNA. And nothing like in the deranged SOTU verbal diarrhea.
Trudeau isn’t pulling any punches any more. The two opening sentences:
The United States launched a trade war against Canada, their closest partner and ally, their closest friend. At the same time, they’re talking about working positively with Russia, appeasing Vladimir Putin, a lying murderous dictator. Make that make sense.
Damn! That is what a leader looks like. It’s hard to remember what that looks like in the US, sadly.
I’ve posted elsewhere that this shitshow is hitting my extended family already through multiple cancelled Canadian vacations to the US. I believe they all voted for Trump, so I’m not upset about it at all. This needs to hurt everyone in the US, and it will. Fuck Trump.
For the record, of the two speeches, I hope you can guess which of the two I, as an American chose to watch and cheer for.
Yup, the flawed human that can rise above his own flaws (at least from time to time, which is all most of us can hope for!) and call out Trump, who, on the other hand, has no consistency except in his love of self and refusal to admit to any errors.
As has been said in many other threads, there isn’t sufficient pushback from the majority of voters or elected officials to even slow Trump down. I am desperately hoping that economic consequences will wake up a sufficient sliver to change things in the US, though I honestly don’t think it will be enough - the damage is too great.
But at least Trudeau was willing to stand up and finally say it. Hopefully an increasing number of our betrayed allies will do so. Though the ongoing information insulation via our profit-driven media will probably prevent it from reaching the needed ears, it is being SAID.
NO sane-washing, no “restrained concern”, no speaking in code. Again, I hope we hear more, internationally and of course domestically.
Leaders tend to get more honest and less politician-y when facing an actual existential threat to their nation.
Also Trudeau is clearly into the “I gave my notice, and I no longer have any fucks to give” phase of his employment as PM.
Definitely! I remember when covid was taking a huge toll on the US and Trump v1 got all honest and not at all politician’y.
