Canadian dopers - destitute abroad, what now?

Hypothetical (more or less) question.

If one were to travel the USA, not use the return part of your ticket in time and end up broke, what recourse do you have with the Canadian embassies/governement? I always have this romantic image of “just make it to the embassy and they will get you home”, but I am probably way off base. What “official” channels can be gone through to get home?

I’m sure an embassy would probably lend you the dough to get home… but they’d probably bill you afterwards.

RickJay’s nailed it.

From the webpage of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, it looks like the first option is to help you to access your own funds in Canada, or to help you get financial support from friends or relatives back home. But failing those options…

Obvious related question;
Will the US do the same?
Peace,

Yes … if an American citizen is destitute abroad, the US will use Canadian public funds, and send them to Canada.

ha.

Okay,

Overseas Citizen Services can approve repatriation loans, in addition to other help for American citizens in dire straits abroad.

The State Department details additional information here

No. You’ll have to gut fish for a while and then go on a tacky gameshow to win tickets back to the USA.
