Warrior Walrus Wrecks Winnipeg… no my mistake that’s how it looks normally in winter.
I saw a good one years ago… about a professor who wears an Aztec mask that he found in Aztec ruins. When he wears it, he turns into a homicidal monster. Don’t recall the name though.
Yeah, the first one is definitely the best.
The Cube, series.
The Bonesetter I believe was set in (at least in part) Canada. Things as well maybe?
(I hate to admit this but I actually own a copy of Bonesetter and had a t-shirt as well. It was bad but in a really good way.)
Not specifically horror, but the 90’s version of The Outer Limits was a Canadian production, I believe. Many of the episodes were quite spooky sci-fi with rather dark endings.
But were they set in Canada? The question isn’t about where they were filmed, but set. Tons of things are filmed in Canada.
I’ve got a relatively recent one: “Enemy”, set in Toronto.
Just watched the little-known Hammer suspense/horror film “Never Take Candy From a Stranger”, a realistic depiction of a child molestation set in Canada (but filmed, I think, in England). One of the subplots is how the British family of the victim is treated by the often disdainful Canadian locals after filing a criminal complaint against the father of a wealthy local family. Christopher Lee said that he thought it was the best film Hammer ever made. The scenes of the silent, aged child molester (who was found not guilty) slowly pursuing the girls who accused him through the forest are actually pretty terrifying, like a real-life Kharis the Mummy. It had a realistic depiction of how accusations of sexual abuse, particularly against those who were considered “respectable” in a community, were often treated at the time. The ending is pretty harrowing. It was a commercial failure at the time, as the audiences were very uncomfortable with the subject matter, and Hammer ended its short-lived attempt at “message” films. It has been rereleased on an omnibus disk with “Children of the Damned.” Very well made and has a lot of the Hammer stock company and behind the camera talent.
Cronenberg’s “Scanners” (the movie where the guys head explodes? Yes that one) was also shot in Canada. I don’t RECALL any references to it being based in Canada, but I also don’t recall any US references either.
I remember that one, it was good. It was a 1961 movie called The Mask.
