Was he not using “Canadian” as a synonym for “liberal” (or “Communist”) — as in “bleeding heart liberal”? Read in context, that actually makes sense, and wouldn’t be an off-the-wall insult, unlike conflating a racial epithet and a nation.

The evidence that “Canadian” being used instead of “n*gger” is widespread, cited in the article, is not even remotely convincing, IMO.

Because of copyright issues I did not want to quote any more of the article than I did in the OP, but if you’ll read it, you’ll find that the word “Canadian” is now being used in daily discourse to mean “African-American,” not “liberal.”

If this is true (and based on the posts here I believe it is), I think the idea is that there isn’t any obvious connection. It’s probably not inspired by anything historical; it’s just supposed to be something people wouldn’t expect to mean “black.”

I just wonder how it came about and how it spread so far. It must be a relatively recent phenomenon, at least 10 years according to one poster. It’s just…odd.

Yes, I heard years ago referencing Jews. The “non-offending” part is silly: the whole point of the usage is to bash openly yet secretly.
