Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor hid the Americans for a few days in the Canadian Embassy and they risked their own freedom by smuggling them out of the country with forged Canadian passports.
My memory ain’t that good, but that’s how I remember it.
More Canadiana…
Those “space arms” work pretty well on those shuttles, don’t ya think?
Jeopardy host Alex Trebek.
Anyone remember when Lennox Lewis won an Olympic medal for CANADA! (Now with that fake British accent - ya TRAITOR!)
Larry Walker - Arguably one of the best baseball players in the game today.
Alexander Graham Bell was a Scot, and lived most of his adult life in Canada without changing citizenship. He developed most of the phone prototypes and made the first working phone in Massachusetts.
A quote from Bell, as found in The Great Canadian Trivia Book:
“Of this you can be assured; the telephone was invented in Canada, and made in the US.”
Case in point, certainly we were all proud of this action by our ambassador, but we’re realists at heart.
We don’t see anything especially remarkable in doing the right thing.
Realistically, what else could he have done, chuck them out into the streets with the mob?
It’s that blind patriotism we can’t quite get into.
And unless I’m mistaken didn’t we invent the whole concept of ‘peacekeeping forces’?
Now that’s something to be proud of, and we are.
