Fortunately, Canadians still have access to THE TRUTH about placentophagy.
*"Did you know that—
In the 16th century, a piece of placenta was added to the mother’s first postpartum meal in southern Germany?..
Or that, even today, in many areas of the world, if a child needs special protection, a dried part of the placenta is tied around his neck?"*
That should be good enough for all you expectant moms. Though for real benefit, placentas should be consumed the natural way - wolfed down raw immediately after giving birth.
Shortly after my wife expelled the placenta from the birth of my first child, the Obstetrician asked if I’d like to see it. “Sure!”, I said. He brought it - all veiny, pinkish grey and shiny, over to where I was standing and pointed out various features. It was fascinating and I asked several questions. One question which never came to my mind was “What are the virtues of corn meal vs. flour breading?”.
Chicken-fried placenta is only made with flour. If you’re making placenta fritters, you use cornmeal.
And of course, there is the wonder that is placenta and grits.
