Must be *^&@#%@& Prentice’s fault.

Postmedia, the Sun and survival:

Muffin, I have to admit, I laughed long and hard at this one. The last sentence was the icing on the cake. Thanks!

I am not a lawyer and I most especially am not a Quebec lawyer. Anything I say should be taken in that context please.

It seems to me that Judge Eliana Marengo must have made her decision in order to force a showdown. Nothing else makes sense.

I don’t know her reputation, but I haven’t seen any hint that she is typically controversial; so for her to compare wearing a hijab to “wearing a hat or sunglasses on his or her head” seems strangely out of character.

I say this because the comparison she made is so belittling as to beg for a Charter challenge or appeal or whatever is the proper response.

There must be precedent for allowing headwear in deference to religious dictate or cultural belief. Assuming that, she must have known this.

So either she’s and idiot or…

She wants the hijab question settled once and for all and she has purposely helped the pro-hijab side by forcing the issue complete with helpful sound-bites.

Or am I misreading something?

Zeke

No “or” about it.

Anyone that insensitive has no business being a judge.

On a much more positive note, Beverley McLaughlin has been a Supreme Court of Canada judge for twenty-six years, sitting as Chief Justice for the last fifteen years:

The Lawyer’s Weekly has a nice article on her that sheds a light on how the SCC functions. Worth reading if you are into balance of powers, and reassuring that balanced people are at the top.

The Junos were on tonight.

Did you watch?

Nope - this is the first I heard of them. Oh, wait, I might have seen Andrea Martin doing a commercial for them - was she the host? In all fairness, though, I don’t tend to watch many awards shows.

So, what are the measles cases up to in Quebec now? 136?

Nope. I’ve been pumping out my backyard. It’s covered in snow, but as soon as you step on the snow you go through to cold water. Did you know that five year old rubber boots degenerate if left in the unheated garage for five winters, making them very leaky?

Pump ran for an hour before it was sucking air. I expect I’ll be setting it on at the end of each afternoon for the foreseeable future.

Why are awards shows always on a Sunday night? It’s all of them - the Oscars, Emmys, Junos, they always seem to be Sunday.

I’ve never understood that.

It’s more likely that there’s nothing on TV worth watching elsewhere, except, possibly, on PBS, and if the awards show plays opposite a PBS pledge drive, it’s a home run.

Still pumping.

Are you sure you are not confusing your backyard with your pool?

I wish!

My backyard is a hollow, lower than our house and one neighbour’s yard, and lower than the back alley. We’re having a long slow melt, so there’s more groundwater each day under the snow. If I don’t pump, it will eventually seep into the basement, or become a breeding pool for mosquitoes.

I just pump it into the back alley, which is graded to take all the spring run-off to the storm sewer in the street.

Has your backyard settled? It shouldn’t be lower than the back alley. You probably need to regrade it.

Man, the process of filing taxes has sure gotten a lot easier. I remember breaking out the calculator, filling out forms by hand after poring through the accompanying guide to make sure I was doing it right, mailing them in, and waiting ages for a cheque in the mail.

Saturday night I popped a few numbers into a StudioTax, netfiled in about 10 minutes, and my return has been assessed and my refund will be deposited in my account on Monday.

I like computers.

Nope, not a settling issue.

The City, in its wisdom, re-graded the alley some years ago to ensure it drained the area well, but in doing so it raised the grade higher than some yards. We’re one of the ones affected, as is our neighbour on the other side, who’s also been pumping.

Grrr - you’ve reminded me of why I hate federal governments. For one (ONE) fucking week of temp work, I have to file as a self-employed business with all the paperwork and forms and extra cost for tax software that that entails, because for some Godforsaken reason, the federal govermnent made temporary employees self-employed contractors last year. I guess the silver liining is that the tax software seems able to handle it this year - last year I had to file manually, because the tax software couldn’t deal with my situation as a temp worker.

What makes me the maddest about this is, what did temp workers ever do to deserve this?

Posted by an acquaintance on Facebook.

“Under every Prime Minister since Pearson, Canada was the #1 provider of UN Peacekeepers. Under Stephen Harper, we are now 62nd. Bring back Canada’s commitment to peace.”

To which I responded:

“Because our troops were deployed elsewhere perhaps? We hadn’t been in active combat since the Korean war, before peacekeeping was even a thing. Our troops were deployed in Afghanistan. They were sent there by the Liberals. Is this too difficult to figure out?”

Am I correct, or not?

ETA: I’m just stating the facts.
