It’s New Year’s already on Cape Spear, Canada’s easternmost point!
Come in, come in, out of the cold and the storm. Canadoper Pub is open for another year. There’s a fire burning in the corner fireplace, and friendly Canadadopers to chat about all things Canadian. A friendly barkeep will furnish you with your favourite tipple.
There’s big screen TVs going with sports, especially the junior hockey tournament right now, but soon to be NHL, curling, and CFL - is it the Riders year? Of course it is!
Feel free to move from table to table and join in the conversations. Trudeau, Scheer, Singh, Beaulieu and May are all fair game. And whatta bout that pipeline, eh? Will it be Notley or Kenney in the Alberta election?
And don’t forget all songs and books that catch your fancy - share them with us.
Meilleurs vœux et bonne année! Happy New Year and best wishes to all!
I, for one, am optimistic about this new year. A few lingering 2018 issues to resolve but they should pass quickly. Family and friends are my focus and they are all awesome.
My mom did have a good brownie recipe (though no particularly “special” ingredients.)
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1/4 tsp salt
Melt butter in medium saucepan and remove from heat.* Stir in cocoa, then stir in brown sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Blend in flour, nuts and salt. Spread evenly in a greased (with butter) and floured 8x8 inch pan.** Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool in pan. Yield: about 16 brownies.
*Recipe says to melt the butter in a saucepan on the stove, though melting it in the microwave in a microwave-safe bowl works as well.
**You can buy metallic pans at the store.
Happy New Year All! This year past was marginally better for me than 2017 so I’m hoping I’m on an upward trend here. Hope every one had a good time on the 31st!
Happy New Year, fellow Canadian dopers! 2018 ended with my son’s engagement; 2019 will probably end with my son’s wedding. They are already talking kids. Lord, what are the chances of my being a grandfather by December, 2020? That would be the most awesome thing I could imagine!
So a minor Cabinet Shuffle and it looks like we have a new VA minister who is none too pleased to be there. I suspect we aren’t going to be better served by Ms. Wilson-Raybould than we were by Mr. O’Regan. I’m really hoping we get a minority government next election, so at least there are some kind of checks and balances.
