It’s true that Colbert is a funny guy. He could tell all sorts of not-funny jokes and make them funny. But what’s funny is Colbert, not the underlying racial “humor”.
It seems to me that this sort of misunderstanding often happens when someone makes an analogy. Someone will seize on a part of the analogized thing and fail to understand the broader point. Yes, Colbert made a tasteless caricature of asian people. But he did it purposefully and satirically to show how idiotic and clueless the people who are sincerely making tasteless caricatures of native americans are.
