Did you find Colbert's Trump Comment Homophobic?

I thought Colbert was a bit crude. I don’t find it Homophobic.

Gays don’t exclusively have a monopoly on fellato. Girls do it too.

It’s a normal sex act. Practiced every day by tens of millions of people. Not a gay slur imho

Obviously some thought went into this writing. It was probably discussed at length among Colbert’s writers. Comics are painfully aware how hyper sensitive audiences are today.

I think the entire piece is well crafted and devastatingly on point.

“Sir, you attract more skinheads than free Rogaine,” the host continued. “You have more people marching against you than cancer. You talk like a sign-language gorilla that got hit in the head.” And then the kicker: “In fact, the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s cock holster.”

Fellato? Is that the new ice-cream thing I keep hearing about?

Italian tenor.

Missed the edit window.

Fellatio.

I’ll be sucking on that word for awhile.

Colbert has been talking about Putins dick so much I’m pretty sure he’s gay. So, not homophobic.

Interestingly, while YouTube has been mass-demonetizing channels which may be considered controversial, they had no problem placing a one-minute nonskippable ad before Colbert’s “cock holster” video.

No. But this is.

It’s of a piece with all of the imagery depicting Trump and Putin as lovers or sex partners. It’s calling Trump “gay” and intended as an insult.

Take it out of the political realm. If one of your coworkers directed a putdown at two other coworkers by saying, “they’re gay for each other,” would that be a slur? I tend to think so.

The only mistake was saying it on mass market broadcast television. It wasn’t homophobic. It was disrespectful to the office of the President, although I am not offended that he made the remark about Trump.

I found the gorilla comment more triggering, but only because I know more hyper-sensitive deaf people than I do hyper-sensitive gay people. As also noted by others, fellatio isn’t gender orientation specific.

  1. In my opinion, it’s not a homophobic remark.

  2. In my opinion, if this comment had been made by a conservative about a liberal politician, many people would call it homophobic, and many of those same people are now defending this as not homophobic.

Agreed.

Also agreed.

OTOH, the rant was funny, so I can forgive much.

Offhand, I can’t think of a liberal politician friendly enough with Putin to want to blow him.

In Russia, Putin blows you!

I don’t find it homophobic.

Oddly enough I do find it to be slightly shocking. Colbert has been going at Trump pretty hard (heh) but even I, a Colbert fangirl and Trump h8r, found the comment to be a little past his line.

It must have been, right? And it’s a fellatio joke, so it’s obviously homophobic at *some *level. Don’t anyone tell me that it’s gender neutral and all innocent, just because ladies suck dick, too. I mean, it’s a sweet thought, but no one here is *that *naive, surely? We all know that a guy sucking a dick is not the same thing as a lady doing it.

The question, then, is what level the homophobic element operates at. Is the joke homophobic, or meta-homophobic?

Right. So it’s shock value. It gets your attention. It makes you sit up and take notice.

And that’s all I’ve got. No unified theory, sorry.

Not homophobic. It’s about Trump being subservient, not being gay.

GargoyleWB, what does the gorilla comment have to do with being deaf? Or are they just so sensitive that just mentioning sign language is triggering?

Seconded.

I have seen the concept described as:
–the person getting their dick sucked holds a lot of power and is very important,
–the person sucking the dick does not have as much power and wants to please the powerful person to gain some favor.

It is not particularly homosexual, it is about a power disparity and gaining favor from a powerful person.

I think any normal person should be offended when they are compared to Trump. Gay people have done a lot for this country; they should not be debased by being equated in any way, directly or indirectly, to the President of the United States.

Colbert would do right to apologize.
