Cancelled: My Own Worst Enemy, Lipstick Jungle - And Perhaps Prison Break Too

I’m reading the list of shows cancelled, and… not seeing Kath & Kim??? Seriously?

Admittedly it’s all kind of a blur at this point.

“So, Michael had to bust his brother off of death row, where he was after being framed for a murder he didn’t commit by a sinister all-encompassing conspiracy. Then, they got out and went looking for D.B. Cooper’s money. Then…something something…they all wound up in in a different prison in Panama–which was at the behest of an all-encompassing conspiracy; I don’t recall if it’s the same all-encompassing conspiracy who framed [del]Dumbass Brother[/del] Lincoln or not. The cute doctor was beheaded. (:() But then she got better. (:)) And now they’ve all broken out of the second prison (the one in Panama) and are trying to round up the bits of some Techno-MacGuffin that will bring down all-encompassing conspiracy #2 (which may or may not be the same as the original all-encompassing conspiracy), and which at any event is responsible for framing Michael and Co. and getting them tossed in the Panamanian hoosegow in the first place and (not really) decapitating his girlfriend, thus engendering a burning desire for revenge on his part against all-encompassing conspiracy #2 (or possibly all-encompassing conspiracy #1), and thus ironically having sown the seeds of its (the all-encompassing conspiracy’s) own destruction.”

“Or something like that.”

Of course the world makes sense. It’s just that its Gnostic sense.

Kath and Kim got a full season, but I can’t see how it will make two…

For those who said Prison Break should have ended earlier, I agree. I thought the premise was OK for one season, but after that it gets sillier and sillier.

They can kill of Worst Week as far as I’m concerned. It isn’t as stupid as Kath and Kim, but close enough as to not matter.

[Regarding Pushing Daisies. It had good art direction. I could have gotten into it if it weren’t for that awful narration.

I was just getting into My Own Worst Enemy. Thought Christian Slater really sold it. Would probably work best as a limited series, say 12 episodes – something they do on UK telly a lot (as noted upthread).

The show’s insanity (and humor) is what makes it so appealing.

Random musings:

How could they cancel My Own Worst Enemy? Every recent promo referred to it as a hit!

Wasn’t Lipstick Jungle just moved to a different night? Not one I watch, but I hate being jerked around like that as a viewer… to follow a show around rescheduling whims and then lose it immediately after the change.

I’m actually enjoying Prison Break right now. There, I said it. That doesn’t mean people who felt it should have gone only one season or only two seasons are wrong, of course. And Season 3 was teh suck. Yes, I watch too much TV.

Heads-up: According to Jim returns next month. Fire up those DVRs.

If it helps, it is all one conspiracy. This season has been better than 2 and 3.

I like MacGuffins, especially Egg MacGuffins.

My sentiments for pretty much all network TV, including the pay channels that have become ersatz network shite. Why bother watching this stuff? They’re just going through the motions to sucker advertisers and moronic watchers, anyway. There’s more entertainment value in ShamWow commercials…

The Writing has been on the wall. I’m not happy about it but I knew the show was doomed.

I doubt we can do anything, but if you see a campaign to save the show, please let us know.

Next Week it finally returns after two straight weeks without.

Thank for that detailed opinion. What shows do you like?

I’m glad they’re cancelling Prison Break. I never liked that show and the fact that it’s on next to that stupid Terminator show means that one of the two only decent network to watch has nothing to watch on Mondays for me. and FX doesn’t have much going on Mondays either.

That has NOTHING to do with taking revenge. You’d understand if you were eviller.

I wish he had a bigger audience as I really liked “Dead like Me” too. I think us fans of his shows are just a minority. Quirky Supernatural Dramedies are not popular fair is the problem. I even liked “Wonderfalls” just no as much as the other two.

I not big on the Revenge thing, but if **NAF1138 **needs a follow along activist, well that’s me.

Heck, I liked both Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me enough that I own them on DVD, and there aren’t many shows that I own on DVD.

Despite what Cisco thinks, I feel like Pushing Daisies is probably the smartest most interestingly subversive and most consistently entertaining show on television. It is also one of the darkest shows on TV while wrapping itself in a facade of twee, which is a tough trick to pull off.

My wife was involved in the TWOP campaign to save Veronica Mars.* So while I know that there is probably nothing that can be done to save it, I like to hold out hope. At the very least I hope that they will allow the show to have some sort of ending. I am tired of Bryan Fuller’s shows getting pulled before anything can be resolved.

*Which worked, and turned out to be a total waste. But who knew that Rob Thomas only had one good season in him?

Industry scribe here with insider insight

Don’t be so quick to think Knight Rider looks good for a second season  What bugs ME is what FOX did to Dollhouse, which hasn’t even STARTED yet. They took what was going to be a good timeslot for it (Mondays, paired with 24) and moved it to the Friday Night Death Slot. Seriously. Think about the Demos for Dollhouse, a Joss Whedon show… They are taking Sarah Connor Chronicles, moving THAT to Friday nights and pairing it with Dollhouse. WAY to sign both of them to a quasi-certain death… Gah. I hate Fox.

Here’s the list of shows that are either canceled already or “don’t look too hot for renewal” at this point:

Canceled
Easy Money (CW)
Valentine (CW)
Do Not Disturb (FOX)
The Ex List (CBS)
Lipstick Jungle (NBC)
Til Death (FOX)
My Own Worst Enemy (NBC - it was doing well. Go figure.)

About to die
Crusoe (NBC - 13 ep. mini series, doing very poorly, will it live?)
Everybody Hates Chris (CW)
Pushing Daisies (ABC)
Eli Stone (ABC)
Dirty Sexy Money (ABC)

Probably gonna die in May
Boston Legal (ABC – final season)
Old Christine (CBS)
The Game (CW)
Life (NBC)
Numb3rs (CBS – shitty timeslot, may survive?)
TSCC (FOX)
Gary Unmarried (CBS)
Kitchen Nightmares (FOX)
Law & Order (NBC – I have my doubts that it will die)
Knight Rider (NBC)
Prison Break (FOX)
The Unit (CBS – final season, I believe.)

On the bubble, by the ratings?
Ghost Whisperer (CBS – shitty timeslot)
Privileged (CW)
Samantha Who? (ABC)
Without a Trace (CBS)
Ugly Betty (ABC)
Chuck (NBC)
Cold Case (CBS)
Life on Mars (ABC)
Kath & Kim (NBC)

Shame about these 4. All are good shows and Life on Mars has the potential to be a great show.

From what I can tell (I am not industry insider but I do work with them on a daily basis) up until very recently networks had been cautious about axing shows becuase they felt that the recent election was causing an across the board ratings drain.

What changed in the last week?

This irritates me so much. And it’s doubly irritating because I think The Sarah Connor Chronicles is doing great with DVD sales. I know it’s not a traditional way to measure TV success, but there is obviously an audience for the show that Fox seems determined to ignore. And now they’re taking Dollhouse down with it and that hasn’t even aired a single episode yet.

But why is Law & Order listed under Probably gonna die in May? It just premiered two weeks ago and both episodes have been great. Does NBC want it to die or something? I thought it turned it around last season?

Ah, Crap! I LIKED Easy Money on CW. Yeah, it was a bit cheesy, but it had some good storylines, didn’t make everyone a dumb-ass stereotype, and Laurie Metcalf did the quietly-psycho-domineering-mob-boss-floozy really, really well.

Yeow. I for one think that he’s the weakest link of the show. The man couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag: both Edward and Henry have the exact same mannerisms, which are the exact same mannerisms every single Christian Slater character has ever had. Compare that with the other actor playing a dual role, the bald guy: he can act, and his two characters are easily distinctive.
Sucks about “Pushing daisies”. I hope the potential for selling DVDs of a cult classic like this one will maintain it on air.

This just makes me sad. Or makes me want to kick a puppy*. Why oh why do all the smart funny shows with interesting concepts and sharp writing not attract an audience?** Does America really want to see American Idol XLIIII instead? Have we become that dumbed down that we cannot be entertained any other way?

*I am not, and will never, be an advocate of kicking puppies. So save your Pit thread.

***Sports Night, Studio 60, Joan of Arcadia *(which SciFi picked up, aired about four shows, then pulled it from the schedue) etc etc etc
