I am thinking about running to Chinatown to pick up some of this candy for the trick or treaters tonight. If I can’t find it I will have to go with something else that looks equally delectable. Do any of you give candy like that out for Halloween?
Hell, that fits both “trick” and “treat”, so I think it’s funny. Plus kids are weird-- a lot of them will probably end up liking it.
It’s also a little mean, because most kids these days don’t expect the “trick” portion at all, and will avoid your house next year. So if that’s what you’re after, by all means. If you actually like getting trick-or-treaters, I’d give something tasty. It can still be unusual (there are a lot of wonderful candies available at Asian and other specialty markets), but it doesn’t have to taste like “gasoline and onions.”
I always give out candy that I like, because I never know if I’ll end up with leftovers or not. Last year, I had a little bit leftover; the year before, I had to have my roommate run out and buy more candy…this year, I have 3 unopened bags of candy bars, plus some left in the bowl from the open bags.
I’m not sure what I’m gonna do when I have a place of my own and little kids come to trick-or-treat. I’ll probably give healthier stuff to the smallest of kids because I personally wouldn’t want my child to be having large amounts of candy before, say, age 9… I’d probably get the more popular candies for the older kids, though. I remember when I was younger and I hated when I got nasty unpopular stuff when I went trick or treating. I always gave it away to the rare person who actually liked the stuff.
I’m assuming you have one of two intentions, dorkusmalorkusmafia: to keep the kids off your doorstep next year, or to make them at least cut back on the candy consumption. I could definitely see myself not wanting candy as much if I got some really gross stuff that I hadn’t tried before that night. Then again, that might just be me.
I had bought one mixed bag of candies - I didn’t give out half of it. We probably had all of 20 kids come to the door. So my coworkers can have the leftover tootsie rolls and Smartees and bubble gum.
Glad it’s over…
FairyChatMom, it also makes great stocking stuffers. That’s what my m-i-l does with the leftover.
We only had three small groups. We didn’t actually buy Halloween candy, but I’d already bought a large thing of Now&Laters and Twizzlers at CostCo to take with me on our Disneyworld trip, so I was more than happy to share that.
