My dog has gas…terrible, terrible gas. She’s a 90 lb. Labweiller (Rotti/Lab mix). It’s been going on for the past week or so. I know they sell anti-gas medicine, but is there anything I may have sitting around the house I can use. Can gas be a symptom of a bigger problem (other than almost killing anyone w/in 20 feet of the dog!)
Have you made any recent dietary changes? Dogs’ digestive systems are very sensitive to changes in diet. Even changing from one brand of dog food to another of the same type can have an impact. If not, and it continues, I’d suggest bringing your dog to the vet (warn him in advance).
It’s probably due to whatever she’s eating. Lots of dogs have food allergies of varying severity.
Has she always had gas, or has it started recently?
One of my dogs developed terrible gas and runny poop. He started losing weight even though he was eating twice as much as my other dogs. It took quite a bit of time (and $$) to find out he was suffering from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Basically, his pancreas wasn’t putting out the right kind of enzymes to enable him to digest his food, and stuff was just passing right through him.
This is probably not what’s wrong with your dog though. It’s fairly rare.
Look for a lamb and rice based food and see if that will help.
Call your vet if bad gas comes on suddenly, it can be a symptom of other things, like allergies or intestinal problems, like parasites.
It could be a lot of things. Our dog is a vigorous chewer, and if she swallows too much air as she chews she gets gas. Rawhide bones do it to her if she eats them too fast, hence, not more of the flavored ones, she likes them too much. We all then pay the price.
I feel for you, doggie gas is the worst.
I’ll second those who asked about a change in diet. If we switch brands on our dogs, the German Shepard/Shar-Pei mix starts dropping ass like you wouldn’t believe. Ditto if we mix in some leftover chicken or something similar in their food.
I think she likes doing it to get attention or somethin - it certainly illicits a reaction from her Mommy and Daddy (along the lines of “Jesus Christ, what just died” and “light the candles! light the candles!”) but we don’t yell at her - its not like its her fault, and I’m reasonably sure she couldn’t be taught to pass gas in an empty room.
Could she?
We have a yellow lab mix (mixed with what else we haven’t the slightest clue) and when she passes gas, man, the whole room clears out. Even the other animals leave! The funniest thing though is when she farts, she gets this startled look on her face and twists around to look at her rear like “What’s going on down there??”
No, there’s been no change in diet. She has a pretty sensitive stomach (always has) so if I changed her diet, she would definitely get diareha (spl?). Still, if she had eaten something she found, I can understand gas for a day or two, but it’s been a good 7 or 8 days now.
This is true. All 3 of our dogs had terrible gas and we switched to lamb & rice based food and it took care of it.
I feel for ya, this is a horrible thing to endure.
Compressed raw-hide bones give my chocolate lab bad gas, too.
It all depends on your point of view, though. You see puppy gas as a bad thing. I see it as another chance at bonding with my pet. Maybe it is my competitive nature, I do not know. I gave him a bone while I sat down with a few low quality beers (Stag) and some cauliflower.
I take it as a point of personal pride that the dog left the room first.
You da man! Well, gas man anyway.
