Canon camera help: Won't download photos

I got a very nice Canon PowerShot SD 600 digital camera. I’ve taken some photos. I’ve loaded the software onto my XP-running Compaq laptop, which has plenty o’ room on it. Photos can be reviewed in-camera. Battery is charged up. Software claims it’s loaded correctly.

I get to the step where the computer recognizes the device (as a camera, by name) and pops up a “what do you want to do?” window. I click what the manual says to click. Then–nothing. The window that will allow me to download my phtos to the computer does not appear.

I’ve uninstalled the software and reinstalled it. I’ve followed every step in the troubleshooting guide (including going to the device manager and uninstalling as directede). I’ve tried switching the camera battery, and tried every combination of sequencing for attaching the cables, turning the camera on, etc. I’ve tried going into the software to open it manually. No dice.

To recap: Camera seems fine. Software loads fine. Computer initially recognizes the camera. But the process stops here. Ideas, suggestions, questions welcome. Valium I’ll take care of myself.

Thanks.

I should add that I am logged into my computer in the account that is “system administrator.” I’m running antivirus software, but that has not stopped downloads from online or the installation of new software up to this point.

If you plug in your camera and open My Computer, do you see your camera listed (perhaps as a removable drive)? If so, you can open it and download your photos to a folder on your hard drive or open the photos directly with your image-editing software, just like with any other drive. I don’t even use the software my camera came with; it just adds bells and whistles I don’t really need.

PErsonally I use a memory card reader to download my photos, as it doesn’t drain the battery power of my camera or require it to keep the camera hooked up to my computer.

crazyjoe’s got it! Quck & easy. Readers are quite inexpensive, usually have 4 or so slots for different memory cards, and are handy for a lot of things. When hooked to the USB, just like another drive. I use it with my Canon, as it’s easier to open the SD card slot than the slot for hooking the cable.

Same here, I just drag from the camera directory onto a flash drive or the hard drive.

I second crazyjoe and KlondikeGeoff’s recommendation. I’ve had three digital cameras, and I’ve never transferred pictures via a cable from the camera. Sticking your memory card/chip into a reader is faster and simpler, and no need for quirky software.

Thanks!

I third the recommendation for a card reader.

But the cable to the camera should work just fine as well.

Nuts, I know it’s late, but just thought of something else the OP might not realize. If you drag the images from the card reader to a HDD folder with the right mouse button held down, it will give you the choice to Copy or Move.

If you pick Move, it will put them in your folder and erase them from the memory card (if that’s what you want). Some camera instructions say to delete only from the camera menu, but I have done the above for some time with two cameras, and no problems.

My experience is that it wont load unless I have a newly charged battery. Then it works well.

Thanks, all. I’ll save this thread against future card reader purchases. The “My Computer” strategy worked.
