So I’m out Christmas shopping, and I decide to stop in to the local porn video place to see about a stocking stuffer for my girlfriend. Well lemme tell you, these places aren’t doing much to combat the commonly held stereotypes…
The first shop I went into was full of cigarette smoke, had a few shady looking older men skulking around the booth area in the back, and had a video selection from the early 80’s. Not one DVD in the whole place. Shameful.
The second place was only marginally better. It was clean at least, but also strangely bereft of DVD’s or any videos that looked halfway recent.
Someone needs to revamp that business. There’s money to be made if the porn shop could be brought out of the alleys. Think about how lingerie was sold before “Victoria’s Secret” - the porn video shop concept could be remade the same way.
When I told my girlfriend this afterward she asked, “What did you expect - to have young beautiful women behind the counter offering to help you?” And I said that was precisely what they should have if they want to make more money! Why don’t people think of these things?
Well, you’re right. But sadly, at least here in the bible belt, there are laws (or just ordinances?) about things like that. Can’t be so many feet from a church, can’t be so many feet from a school, restricted advertising abilities, boycotts, protests…etc. I also suspect that most cities don’t want them close to “legitimate” businesses, and likewise the other businesses don’t want them close either.
Porn - everyone looks at it but only dirty, sick satan worshippers admit it.
here in atlanta we have quite a few nicer boutiques of porn/adult toys. a small chain called insurrection. there are laws here about it (not suppposed to sell something whos main purpose is to stimulate the genitals or something), but doesn’t seem to keep them out of business somehow. i think they did have to go to court over it before, but i can’t find a link (previous name of the chain was 9 1/2 weeks).
there is also a store here called poster hut that seems to cater to the man on man market.
You can’t hardly swing a cat without hitting a porn shop/erotic toys boutique in Alberta. In the vast majority of cases, they franchises of big porn chains, and they are all very clean and modern, with DVDs etc…
I went looking for one a few months ago. I could not for the life of me find them listed in the phone book. I looked under everything I could think of, sex, adult entertainment, lingerie, porno, you name it. I finally had to drive 30 mintues to one that I knew.
Speaking of porn shops… I’ve been waiting for over a YEAR now. Waiting for the fundies to come protest at the store.
It’s been a life long dream to go through a porno picket, but the LARGEST buttplug I can find and head out the door and hand it to a guy standing out there and say, “Here’s that buttplug you wanted”.
We’ve got nice outfits here in Seattle. Blue Video on Aurora is clean, well-organized, and brightly lit. And for all your equipment needs, look no further than L’Amour on the Boulevard down by Southcenter.
Yeah, we’ve got the skanky places too, but why would you want to go there?
Back home in South Florida, there were porn stores all over the place, and most of them were like pornographic and sex toy warehouse emporiums, not like the one or two rinky dink porn stores up here in Tallahassee… it’s actually kind of funny because they really lack in quality but do have lots of up to date dvd porn because of the large college crowd. It must have something to do with the 2 universities and 1 community college in the town.
I live within walking distance of 5 porn shops and 1 video place that has a huge selection of porn for rent. If I wanted ot actually drive to my porn, then of course, the number goes up. I think there are 15 within easy driving distance.
Yep, I live in a classy part of town…
