So today i get one of those messages in IE saying that there are update available for Windows 2000. There are about five of them so I decde to go for it. After they are downloaded the machine needs to be restarted. When I come back later the machine won’t boot. It goes through the mem check and then the Windows logo come up and then it shuts down. Arggh!! Help!!!
Unplug all your USB devices and try to boot
I just tried, and it didn’t help
I just realized its Win98 not 2000
Unless a binary has been munged a lot of the time refusals to start are related to hardware conflicts. You might also try playing around with the BIOS and shutting down open com ports or the sound chip (if MB based) or removing non mission critical PCI cards. If that doesn’t work it might be SOL time.
Nothing changed with the HW, I just installed the updates. The only recovery disk I have is a CD that wants to wipeout the HD and reinstall from scratch. At least I just backed up the book I am working on.
1: Will it boot in safe mode? (tap f8 key while booting to get menu)
2:Assuming the disk is OK you can slave it to another working system as a secondary drive and pull off critical files. It’s time to put WIn 98 based systems to bed anyway. XP is worlds better.
-
Reboot in safe mode with networking - right click on My Computer, go to manage, and verify all hardware devices are loaded properly, and performing correctly.
-
Reboot and start in VGA mode - those hardware reboots are usually due to incorrectly installed video drivers/updates. Roll back updates to previous version if possible.
-
Reboot and start in VGA mode or Safe Mode, and Uninstall the Windows 2000 Updates. You can do this from Add/Remove programs - you can do this by going to windowsupdates.microsoft.com, scanning your computer, then viewing your installation history. Uninstall any that you installed previously.
There are lots of things we can do - try these and let us know how it works!
Whoops :smack: just noticed the clarification on Win98. Ignore the VGA Mode and the Safe Mode with networking.
Safe mode boot with update uninstall should work. Also, a repair install of Windows 98 should keep your data/desktop icons/settings intact while returning your system to defaults - but could also cause major headaches.
