Can't find article: Slavery Charges, Late 1990s, NC Central U Poli Sci Professor

I had a professor when I studied at NC Central in Durham, NC, who claimed that the former chairman of his department had fled to avoid prosecution on federal slavery charges.
The professor in question [the one who relayed the story, not the subject] was a jovial fellow prone to hyperbole.
I just now tried to fact check his claims and came up empty…

Can anyone Google or otherwise turn up a story along these lines?
Supposedly the man ‘hired’ a domestic servant of foreign extraction, and it turns out that she was not entirely free to leave his employ.
From the way the story was told, I’d suspect the year of occurence was 1996-1999… if it actually happenned.

I bet the student newspaper would know, and if not, they’d be the ones to do the legwork for ya, probably appreciate the tip.

Need more info. I did a quick Proquest newspaper search. Nothing.l

Was the professor who committed the illegal act also at NC Central?

Also, I seriously doubt the guy was charged with any mention of “slavery.”

Probably “involuntary servitude” or something.

Sorry if I was unclear.
The subject was an NCCU professor, who was chair of the poli sci department

The person telling the story was another NCCU professor in the same department.

Here’s the story:
Professor A is the department chair.
Professor B is a professor.
Professor C is a professor and is the one that told me about all of this.

Professor A walks into Professor B’s office.
Professor A declares that Professor B is the new departmental chair, as Professor A is leaving.
Professor B tells Professor C that Professor B is the new departmental chair, and the Professor A has left.

Months later, Professor C tells Mr. Slant about the above, adding that Professor A fled due to running afoul of antislavery laws in regards to a domestic servant of some asian nationality.

Disclaimer:
Is this true? Danged if I know, which is why I’m asking.
Did I just accuse any NCCU faculty member, past or present , of any crime? No, I’m not Nifong!
