Can't get the hang of AC III combat - any help?

I love this series of games but I’m having real trouble on this installment. Counter kills, which used to be my standby, don’t seem to work as well, and combat isn’t as fun as it used to be. I’m really trying not to compare him to Ezio, but it’s difficult. I want to get to the time when I have my own assassins but it’s difficult to slog through the times when I don’t, and fighting is downright annoying. I end up getting chased all over town. And it doesn’t help that there’s seemingly guards on every roof.

It feels like there’s a lot more “required” combat anyway. i don’t mind fighting, but I vastly prefer stealth kills. Please help, I am dying to play the final installment of one of my favorite games of all time.

Reported for move to Games.

Beyond that, I’m sorry I can’t help you there - rassum frassum windows xp not supported wankers…

Counter-kills should be easier to pull off this year. Just tap the block button sometime during a swing, then leisurely tap the counter button. If anything, the timing’s actually (at least on PS3) easier in AC3.

You do, as in previous instalments, have to watch out for certain enemy types - officers, “bruisers” and jaegers are particularly pesky, but all you really need to do is perform a disarm counter and you should be good to go. In general, disarming, whether by counter or aggressively so, is much more valuable in this edition than in previous instalments - bruisers in particular will mess you right up if you try to kill-counter or plain hack at them, and they’ll do so much faster than they did before.

Not with regards to combat (I always sucked at it, but I ALWAYS suck at game combat) - you’re really not supposed to be up on the roofs. It’s almost impossible to spend more time than absolutely necessary up there because they’re on you with such a quickness. I played than one and now I’m playing 2 and the style is totally different - with 2 you’re really supposed to practically live up there. You have to rethink your strategy for getting around a lot.

I will try to implement both of your advice. For the moment, I’ve gone back to Batman Arkham Aslyum, where at least I can shitkick thugs with impunity. I will, eventually go back to AC III…and I guess more walking around on the ground. :frowning: It almost hearkens back to AC I, and walking s-l-o-w-l-y past guards.

One thing that got me for a little bit due to habit: do not not not not not hold RB/R1 (the button that switched you from offensive controls to defensive) like you used to. It will make bad things happen. Similarly, when freerunning do not hold X/A which was the freerunning button in previous games, R1 is sufficient for climbing and holding X will just cause you to jump off of things to your doom.

They made the controls a lot better in ACIII IMO, but they’re hell on people who have played the previous games because they changed them so much.

Yes, I agree. I really would have preferred they didn’t change the controls at all. I’ve gotten the hang of (usually) not jumping madly off things, but “block” still gives me trouble.
