You ditch the ‘u’ from favourite because it is silent?
Fine also, makes sense and all that.
But then why don’t you ditch the last ‘e’? why not ditch the h from ‘why’? why not replace the ‘oe’ in shoe with ‘oo’?
If you took the logic ‘ditch the u because it is silent’ to it’s extreme. what you end up with would not be English.
The ‘u’ is there bacause that’s how the english language IS!
(logic asside - I happen to like the British spelling of all words. they roll off the tongue better)
