Looking forward to seeing the fallout from Amanda’s eulogy. The previews for tonight seemed to feature James Marsters, but those may have just been clips from the upcoming season. I hope we see more of Clarice Willow.
Well we can safely cast aside any doubt about Uncle Sam’s sexuality now. Not only is he gay he’s married, with apparently doesn’t raise any eyebrows in the frakking Mafia. This felt like a bridge episode. Oh, and how backward is the Caprica City Police that they’re using video tapes? Even on BSG (where technology was deliberatly regressed) they had those little octogon video “discs”.
Another Meh from me. Starting to think I have a basic problem with the way Ron Moore views the world. There are no heroes, and Caprica doesn’t even have any likable citizens from what we’ve been shown. Joe Adama is a crooked lawyer. His brother is mob muscle, and the future last, best hope for survival is a street thug in training. Daniel Greystone has no redeeming qualities, his wife hasn’t demonstrated any, and his daughter was either evil or stupid, possibly both. Sister Whatsherface and the mousy girl are knowingly supporting terrorists. The cops are crooked. The judges are crooked.
Hell, I’m starting to think maybe the Cylon attack was a public service intended to rid the galaxy of a few million assholes.
I think Zoe has the potential to be a heroine. She’s rather confused, but she’s quite young. She is idealistic and brilliant, so there is hope for her. And we know young Adama grows up OK therefore something in his future will steer him away from the life of crime and into the realm of heroes are made of so we must be patient and allow for growth and development of characters. Although I must admit that “Daddy Adama” made an awfully quick trip from marginally conflicted mob lawyer to full blown mafia knuckle buster.
I have a question about Zoe’s avatar. Why doesn’t Dad realize Zoe’s avatar is in the robot?
He loaded her up into the cyborg and she performed well in the “soldier” test, but then I don’t understand what happened.
I don’t see how Zoe can turn out to be a heroine. She’s the first cylon, we know how they turned out. She’s pursuing whatever the goals of the Soldiers of the One may be, with the knowledge that they’ve already committed a terrorist attack. She’s manipulative, selfish, and apparently amoral.
Daniel doesn’t realize she’s in the robot because when he tried to upload her, there was some kind of glitch, and her data was irretrievably lost–so far as he knows.
LOL!
Ironic. I agree with all of the above but this is what makes me like the show.
Heads up, everyone. No Caprica tonight.
I would guess they would be down in ratings against the Opening ceremony for the Olympics.
Yeah, after last week’s episode I started thinking and realized I didn’t really like anybody. It’s still interesting and I’ll keep watching for now, but “everybody sucks” is no way to run a show. I keep watching with faith that Moore has enough experience to know this, and we’ll see something significant fairly soon.
I think out of everyone, I like the mob muscle brother the most even though he’s corrupting the kid. Sort of like people often “liked” Tony Soprano – he seems like a regular family guy who does terrible terrible things and knows and accepts the possible consequences.
I thought we were supposed to like Zoe’s friend(Lacee?).
Either way I’m still watching something filmed in Vancouver.
D’oh! That’s whay there’s no new episode for me on iTunes! Having very little interest in the Olympics, I couldn’t figure it out.
I’m still withholding judgment. I love the alternate universe aspects, how things are so similar to our world but with often subtle differences. The plot so far hasn’t grabbed me and the characters are, as pointed out, unlikable and generally not too interesting yet. But they’ve been developing the plot and the characters slowly and I’m OK with that. I admire the courage of doing things that way rather that trying to grab viewers by the gut right from the start, like Battlestar did. It’s very soapy so far, which makes it hard to judge any single episode in isolation. For right now, I’m hooked, but I expect to see some real payoff before the season ends.
My biggest complaint is that Zoe is supposed to be this brilliant computer scientist, but she seems like an incredibly dumb (if determined) airhead. I expect to see a character’s traits, not just be told about them. I’d also like to see more about what it’s like to be inside the robot’s body. What is her sense of space like? Her body awareness? It’s got to be pretty strange and disorienting to be in a new and very different body, but they keep downplaying that by switching out the toaster with the avatar. It’s obviously meant to help us connect with the character, but it ends up diminishing rather than highlighting the strangeness of her new situation.
It does, however, emphasize one aspect of the body awareness question: we often see avatar-Zoe squirming around looking uncomfortable while the robot body stands perfectly still. What is this like for her? Is she suppressing the urge to move (something that would be almost impossible in a human body)? Does she “feel” herself squirming (or blinking or coughing) even though the robot doesn’t respond? Or does she feel bound by the robot body, unable to twist or swallow or gasp for air? The virtual avatar seemed pretty capable of doing those things, so I assume it could feel itself doing them just like the real Zoe could. The avatar of Adama’s daughter couldn’t feel her heart beat, but then again, she was aware that she couldn’t feel it. Presumably she could feel herself breathing, swallowing, blinking, etc. and could feel her body just like she could before, except for the heartbeat.
I am not sure why I’m liking it, but I do. I probably like it more, knowing what it’s leading up to, than if I saw this without ever having watched the BSG series, though.
