It may have to be that way, but I don’t think the writers have paid much heed to that. In BSG, Adama and others used to harp on about how humans had souls and cylons didn’t. In modern metaphysics, the soul is held to be the essence needed for consciousness. But, if the civilization in BSG/Caprica thinks of mind as just software, then all the talk about ‘soul’ seems out of place.
… I don’t follow it myself; I just read what other people summarize from it. That is because I find reading Twitter intensely annoying and makes me want to go out and punch people. Not for nothing does “Twitter” incorporate “Twit”.
But the worldbuilding they’re showing is pretty interesting.* Just, very low signal to noise.
