Caprica (Feb. 19, 2010) "Gravedancing"

Didn’t see a thread, so I started this one. New episode tonight, starts in about 15 minutes. I’m still watching, for now, but my patience with this show is wearing thin. Really need to see somebody in this show that isn’t an asshole…
ETA: BAH…meant to include “Open Spoilers” in the thread title.

Was the the theme from TOS we just heard?

Which my closed captioning described as “classical symphony”.

Also, didn’t the trailer/blurbs for tonight’s show show a fistfight on the talk show, or did I misinterpret that? (Went by fast.)

Tonight was better. The Greystones showed some redeeming qualities, Sam gained some depth, Lacey gets herself in deeper, tech-dude dances with Zoe-bot, cops make some minimal progress. Talk-show guy (get the idea I’m not good with names?) seems like the unholy offspring of Jay Leno and Rush Limbaugh.

Kinda wondering how close this series will get to the point BSG begins. I think Caprica started about 50 years before the nukage? Is that right? If so, they have plenty of leeway, but I dunno that I’d like to see a big time jump between seasons. Seems like it would be hard to maintain continuity, and the kid cast as Little Adama ain’t gonna grow up fast enough to play the character as an adult…

Well, we saw that these writers could handle more modest continuity jumps gracefully - they skipped over a year between Baltar’s election and the resistance on New Caprica. (Frakkin’ toasters!)

His name’s Sarno, and his show is called “Backtalk”

I believe it’s officially 58 years before the Fall, meaning 18 years before the end of the first Cylon war. If William Adama is 13, then he’s a young fighter pilot in his twenties during the war, which jibes with what I recall of Adama’s backstory.

Interesting. So it really didn’t take very long at all for the Cylons to rebel against humans. For some reason I was thinking they were kinda docile for a few decades, at least.

Anybody else think the holo-band angle is a thinly disguised analogy for WoW and similar games?

Speaking of backstory, I know that mention of the GDD getting a warrant from the “Intercolonial Court” on Libra was a callback to BSG: The Plan (“the courthouses of Libra are burning”) and Libra being the center of the United Colonies judicial system, but colonies aren’t supposed to be united yet. It doesn’t make any sense that Caprican security services would go off-world to get search warrants. We know Caprica has it’s own court system; we’ve seen Joseph go to a courthouse in Caprica City.
As for tonight’s episode; I give it a meh.

It is the colonial theme from the new BSG as well.

I thought it was OK, but not as good as the previous episodes.

I liked it better than previous episodes, mostly because they’re finally starting to show some redeeming qualities in some of the major characters. They still don’t really have any heroes…I don’t think Moore believes in such things.

Like the other episodes I enjoyed the little moments that developed the characters and the world they’re in, but I wasn’t crazy about the story. Sam NOT killing Amanda was totally predictable. Lacy suddenly showing mechanical know-how was a total cliche. And the dancing? Frakking [del]bullshit[/del]felbercarb.

The bull-on-a-spring on the dashboard of Sam’s car? Brilliant. The tattoo on the stage girl’s hand, followed by the explanation of the Tauron tattoos was also good. And the line about the Intercolonial Courts on Libra. (But seriously, why would that be a matter for the Intercolonial Courts anyway? Isn’t that like going to the Hague for a search warrant?)

Don’t forget Grandma’s indifference to William’s skipping school because on Tauron you become a man at 13.

Grandma is the only character on this show with the glimmers of awesome buried somewhere in there. The bit about Tauron kids playing with the knucklebones of their enemies, and how Uncle Sam “knows how to get things done”: excellent.

I could see her grandson dropping a battlestar on someone’s heads.

For the rest of 'em, I’m with Number One: can’t see how his parents wanted to save these twits.

I got the idea at first that he was supposed to be more of a Jon Stewart type at first (it was mentioned that more young people get their news from him than any other source, which mirrors a study done about the Daily Show a few years ago, I think), but he seems to be played as much more socially conservative than Stewart… not that I don’t like the character, since Patton Oswalt is one of my favorite stand-up comedians. I hope they keep him around, even if he is just in the back-drop.

Sam is my favorite character so far. Though actually, William is much, much less annoying than I anticipated, and I think he might actually be the real breakout character. His relationships with Sam, Grandma, and Joseph are the most interesting of the series.

Lacy has potential too, but I don’t think the writers know quite what to do with her. Clarice (Wasn’t it “Sister Clarice” in the pilot? What happened to that?) has been a lot more interesting than she was in the pilot, what with her plural marriage and all, but they haven’t done anything to show her motivations or character yet. It’s coming, I’m sure.

Oh, and of course Serge. When the Cylon war comes, won’t be no more “Can I help you, Daniel?” Oh no. There’s gonna be a RECKONING.

I definitely hope they keep him around, especially in the back-drop. It would be great to have him on tv in the background every so often, talking about what’s going on in the show, but not being mentioned. Almost a hidden Greek chorus of sorts.

I really liked his “Why am I making a joke?” moment with Amanda. You could really see him struggling as he realized that he was in the middle of history-making event that really called for someone much more suited to serious television than he was, but that he was going to have to do his best and count himself extremely lucky later on if he pulls it off without looking like a buffoon.

It’s still Sister Clarice Willow. She’s a priestess of Athena (Caprican clergy are allowed to marry) and the headmistress of the Athena Academy. Brother/Sister was establised as the title for Caprican clergy (Brother Cavil & Sister Tivenan) on BSG. She’s a closet monotheist, but it’s not clear if her spouses know about or share her beliefs. Even if they do I doubt they know she’s a terrorist.

And I think he did manage to pull it off, after Amanda made her unscheduled appearance. Looked like the wheels were about to come off with him and Daniel screaming at each other, but settled in to a solid segment for his show. Kinda reminded me of the episode of Letterman when Sonny & Cher sang “I Got You Babe”…

Umm, what?

Cher hates Letterman, and I don’t think she’d sung with Sonny in years. Also don’t think that segment was scripted. Letterman took a chance on having her refuse and/or otherwise be unpleasant, and it paid off in a kinda bittersweet, yet touching scene. May have been the last time they sang together.
