Captain America: Civil War - Seen it! [spoilers ahoy]

So, we’re not counting giant-sized Scott Lang in that equation?

Yeah, but she was a crazy stupid fine writer chick who is like a boss in guerrilla journalism with mad connects with the peeps behind the curtains. She’s not your average mope sitting on a park bench.

Stranger

I wouldn’t, any more than I’d count Tony wearing his Hulkbuster armor. Scott Lang isn’t super strong - that’s a function of the technology he uses in his suit. Put anyone else in it, and turn the dial up, and they’d be just as strong.

Actually there is a very good explanation for the change in mass and the scaling of inertia and momentum

the suit

Better than “A wizard did it,” I guess.

The problem with that argument is that Tony Stark and Scott Lang were wearing their technology. So was Jim Rhodes. And I think it’s likely Vision is stronger than Peter Parker. It’s not even clear Parker is stronger than T’Challa.

So Parker’s strength is a lot less justification for recruiting him when he ends up being something like fifth strongest person in a six person team.

Yeah, she would never eye little girls with bad intent. No snot running down her nose.

I can’t talk comic books, but in this movie Parker is clearly stronger than T’Challa, stronger even than Cap and Barnes (not knowing the comics, T’Challa comes across to me in the movie as being “peak human” like Cap). They show footage of Spider-man catching a car that is going 40 miles per hour. Then at the airport he catches that giant gangplank thing.

I know the movies have been seriously hyperbolic in their presentation of “peak human” strength but Spider-man has full-on superhuman strength.

I will confess though: I’m always forgetting that superhuman strength is one of Spider-man’s powers. It’s just not what I think about when I think of the character. In all of the movies, whenever he does something with superhuman strength I’m always like, “Oh, yeah, that’s right- superhuman strength.”

You’re totally right in the comics, but given that they show Cap smashing Iron Man’s armor into scrap metal, it’s not so clear here.

Vision probably is stronger than Parker, as is Thor. But neither of them is human.

And even if he is up against guys in super-suits, he’s still definitely stronger than Hawkeye, Black Widow, or Black Panther. Even with the age difference, one could argue that it’s even more irresponsible to get them involved than him.

“Proportionate strength of a spider”.

Is the Hulk human, when he’s the Hulk?

Bah. Cube square law explains insect (and arachnid) strength. If anything, they’d be substantially weaker, or dead, if scaled up to human size.

I’m a little surprised with all these comic fans, there’s no thread for the new X-Men movie.

There is.

Ah, okay, thanks. I guess it had just dropped off the main page. As the more recent movie, I would have thought it would be the other way 'round, but I guess it’s not nearly as popular.

I don’t know if it’s less popular worldwide, or even on the Dope, but I’ve seen Civil War twice, and have no plans to see Apocalypse, at all. So, take that for whatever you think it’s worth.

Apocalypse made less than half of what CA made on their respective opening weekends, and less than a third on their 2nd weekends.

IMHO* this movie neatly bookends Captain America’s whole story in the MCU. He entered the Army essentially because of his best friend Bucky, now he retires essentially because of Bucky. He came in all gung-ho and ready to fight, now he’s weary and done with fighting.

*Actually, a friend said this right after we saw the movie, but I saw her point.

Yeah, even in the comics Parker seems to mostly use his agility and acrobatic abilities more than super strength, but every once in awhile he catches a car or something to remind us. He doesn’t seem to rely on his strength as much as a lot of other heroes whose main ability is strength.

I thought T’Challa’s strength came from the vibranium in his suit? Otherwise he’s just “peak condition.”

Yeah, I can’t hold onto a helicopter to keep it from taking off, either.

T’Challa partakes of something called “the Heart-Shaped Herb” which enhances his strength, agility, and senses. The comics are a little vague about how much. In most of the comics I have read, he seemed to be “peak human” or just slightly above. Back in the 1970s, he usually teamed up with Captain America or Daredevil, and seemed to be on about the same level as them.

Like the Super-Soldier Serum, the Heart-Shaped Herb is poisonous to most humans, but grants power to a small number of people (mostly members of the Wakandan royal family).
