Captain Marvel "Seen It" Spoiler Thread

Maybe he DID page her during Avengers and she just got here.

“Where’s Fury?”
“Thanos got him”
“Thanos? Who? Did Loki take him? How’s New York?”
“Wait, what?”

I think the difference in situations is that Fury knew the Avengers were on the case all the other times. There’s no indication he knew what the hell was going on when Maria started dissolving at the end of Infinity War. At no point before the credits did we see anyone from SHIELD.

k9befriender:

Well, Spider-Man, at least, uses his code name in public settings and in-costume conversations.

Saw this yesterday with my kids. Found it kind of boring. It does make me wonder, now that there is another hero with almost god-like powers, do they still need “woman who only knows karate” and “guy who shoots a bow and arrow”?

Shrug, that was always the situation even before she showed up. The best in the world with a bow and arrow is easily replaceable by “guy who is sorta ok with an assault rifle”. Also I don’t see why everyone thinks she’s any more god like than Thor, I did not see her do anything Thor couldn’t have done.

For pretty much every MCU it’s pretty easy to justify “why didn’t so and so show up to help”- Most MCU movies take place over a few days (or at least the main threat event over a short time) and everyone else is busy. The biggest difference between Captain Marvel and Superman is that Carol is not Earth’s protector. She’ll help if it’s needed, but she’s got other things to do. So while aliens are attacking midtown Manhattan, she might be stop the Kree from bombing an entire planet.

Natasha has shown that she is more than “woman who only knows karate”

We already know that her plan isn’t to just kick around Earth waiting for shit to happen so having some heroes actually on the planet when things go down is still a good thing.

I must have missed that. When has she shown more than just martial arts?

She a super-spy. We saw that in Avengers. She basically a female James Bond that’s also a better fighter. Yeah, when fight galactic threats she’s not the most helpful, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t serve a purpose that Thor, Carol, Stark, etc. don’t.

Also, don’t underestimate the “guy (or in this case, girl) who knows things” trope.

Her experience as a spy gives her intimate knowledge over a lot of things as the plot needs.

Saw it, loved it.

Not naming Carol by her superhero name within the movie was a nice touch, I thought. It matches the movie-long theme of her searching for her identity and understanding her place in the universe.

I look forward to a scene in Endgame where she finally does claim that moniker.

THOR: “Your costumes are similar, are you perhaps a Captain yourself?”
CAROL: “I’m a colonel in the US Air Force.”
(STEVE salutes)
CAROL: “At ease.”
TONY: “Captain works for superheros. Captain Caveman, Captain Crunch…”
CAROL: “Mar-Vell.”
TONY: “Captain Marvel. Hokey, but it’ll do.”

In the movie, she was only a Captain in the Air Force, so it works better.

Yeah, for narrative purposes they’re both necessary.

Natasha serves as, essentially, Fury/Shield’s stand in. She’s the suspicious spy willing to do what’s needed. Recall, she also knew about The Winter Soldier and was sent by Fury to get Hydra data off the ship with the hostages.

Barton’s role is, as his wife leaned into, more important. He provides the human perspective.

“This is monsters and magic and nothing we were ever trained for.” sums it up pretty well.

Hawkeye’s intel and observation while Nat is infiltration and assassination. Both can beat the crap out of the opposition when needed.

Nat is also interrogation - she figured out Loki’s plan in Avengers, even if just a bit late.

And I imagine its handy to have people who can fight/capture normal humans without constantly calibrating just how hard they should punch/kick them to not turn their skull into red mist.

“I’m in the middle of an interrogation. This moron is giving me everything.” I loved that scene.

Comic book teams always have members with widely differing power levels, including Bad Ass Normals. What does Superman need Batman for? It’s something for the writers to play around with and audiences seem to enjoy it. It doesn’t have to make sense. You either enjoy comics or you don’t, but don’t try to make sense of them. That’s madness.

Cap Marvel reminded me of Agent Carter, the series and how bland it was in comparison to Agents of Shield. I’m sure that it will do what its supposed to do and make Marvel and Disney lots of money, but in the years to come I expect that its going to rank with Cap America, the first avenger.

Clint and Nat handled themselves well enough against the Chitari, part of the team that took down Strucker and that Sword guy in civil war.

Liked it, didn’t think it was great. I do think that Marvel is getting formulaic, and certainly this movie had a Endgame prequel feel to it. Loved the new Stan Lee opening, and the de-aging is really getting impressive. I thought that it was much more realistic than Tarkin in Rogue One.

Well, Tarkin wasn’t de-aging. That was creating a character whose very recognizable actor was long dead from whole cloth.
