Captain Marvel (the new series)

I was introduced to Captain Marvel awhile back, a series which has gotten a modern touch-up. I loved the first issue, so I ordered the first Trade Publication from Amazon. Holy crap. I love it, and I can’t wait for the next TPB to be released. Has anyone else run into the new Captain Marvel series?

Have been reading it since it was re-launched. While I haven’t cared too much for the just-completed “Cap goes nuts” story arc, I do like the direction the comic is taking in the last few issues.

Are you talking about the Marvel Captain Marvel, or the Shazam! Captain Marvel?

C’mon, Fiver - spit it out. You know you want to talk about both of them.

Nothing doing. All I know about the Marvel character is that he was a black woman with an afro at one point.

“Split!”

I yelled “Split!” at the bowling alley the other day, turned to my friend and said “Watch out, my arms will come flying off!” He just looked at me funny.

I enjoy Peter David’s Captain Marvel, but I liked it a lot better before the whole U-Decide crap, which did nothing since they raised the price of the book anyway. Go try to find the First Contact TPB from volume 1 if you want a real fun Capt. Marvel.

Oh, and if you aren’t reading the “previously in Captain Marvel” introduction pages, you are mising some funny stuff.

Glad to hear the family comic is doing well!

Patty “Yes, this is really my surname” Marvel

No, he wasn’t.

The Kree are an alien species which come in two varieties- humans with blue skin, and humans with pink skin. The Kree are constantly carrying on surveilance on Earth and have tried to conquer it a few times. On one of these missions, a Captain in their military, a pink Kree by the name of Mar-Vell, defected and fought for Earth. Crowds misheard his name and dubbed him Captain Marvel. He had many adventures, was linked with Rick Jones through the Nega-bands, becames cosmically aware, and eventually died of cancer.

A black woman named Monica Rambeau was working on an experimental generator (I think for Roxxon, it may have been another company). There was a malfunction. She gained the ability to transform herself into energy. She donned a black and white costume and joined the Avengers under the name of Captain Marvel. AFAIK She is not related or linked to the Kree Mar-Vell in any way.

Mar-Vell’s son, Genis, grew up and developed superhuman abilities. For a while, he went by the name Legacy. Eventually, Rambeau gave him the title of Captain Marvel and switched to the name Photon.

Genis had adventures, became linked to Rick Jones through the Nega-Bands, and may be cosmically aware.

I am surprised tha Marvel hasn’t tried to make Rambeau more prominent as-
She’s one of the few black heroes never to have gone by an alias with the word black in it.

Avengers issues from the 80’s establish that her father was a fire fighter. In fact when she finally reveals her secret to her parents, she gets an Avengers alert and has to fly off. As her parents watch their daughter race through the sky, dad asks mom ‘Is this what it was like for you, watching me get into gear and ride off on the engine?’ ‘Every time.’

Split indeed!
