Captain's Wafers vs Ritz Crackers

It’s been ages since I had Waverly Wafers. I guess they’ve been discontinued? Even Amazon doesn’t have them.

Depends on what you put on the cracker. Spicy salami, jalapeno cheese, or whatever. Crackers are just the base for great appetizers and snacks.

Never heard of Captain’s Wafers. I prefer Carr’s Water Crackers myself.

Keebler Town House crackers are far superior to Nabisco’s Ritz. (My father worked for Keebler for 30 years.)

But it is ridiculously easy to confuse the two. Same red box. Graphic of crackers looks similar on the box, although the layout is different. The supermarket even stocks Ritz and Town House side by side. However, I agree with you that the taste of Town House is superior to Ritz.

Historically, Ritz crackers (like pretty much all Nabisco products) had beef tallow as shortening and thus were not kosher. Captains Wafers (like Hydrox sandwich cookies) were made with vegetable shortening and also had a kosher certification (hechsher). Although Ritz (and Oreos) have been kosher for many years now, kosher consumers remember that Lance wanted their business long before Nabisco. For me, Captains Wafers and Ritz are totally different; even if the dough might be very close the size and shape of the baked product means they have entirely different tastes. I like both, but Captains Wafers bring me back to the 1970s.

In the 10 years since the OP, Ritz has had a serious decline in taste IMHO. Gimme Captain’s Wafers every time.

NewYorker42, welcome to the Dope!

Ritz is still my favorite cracker.

I think they have less fat? Makes them a little healthier.

It did change the taste. That’s true of many snacks that reduced or changed the fat in their product.

Beef tallow can be kosher if it’s prepared according to Jewish dietary laws (e.g. nothing from the hindquarters of the animal, and no suet). What it’s not is pareve, or neutral. Since it’s a meat product, Jewish dietary laws don’t allow it to be eaten with (or even served with) dairy products. Observant Jews wouldn’t be have been able to put cheese on a Ritz cracker, but would have been able to eat them with non-dairy items (like beef salami).

We don’t get either of these, but I’m told Tuc is like Ritz, and I like those.

Captains crackers - aren’t those the ones that have the cream cheese or peanut butter filling (just a tiny smidgen)? I sometimes pick up a packet in the Dollar Tree, they come in handy when I need crackers to go with some cheese or hummus. (The cream cheese filling is almost undetectable). I like Ritz but a box goes stale before I can finish them.
