Car Brands Models in Songs

Then there wuz The Cortinas, some of whom Joe Strummer recruited into “The Clash” for their last album, Cut The Crap.

A few from Fountains of Wayne:

92 Subaru
Winnebago (The Valley of Malls)
Buick (Amity Gardens)
Volkswagen Van (Peace and Love)
Lexus (Denise)

"Taxi" - Harry Chapin

We learned about love in the back of a Dodge
The lesson hadn’t gone too far

"Night Moves" - Bob Seger

Out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy
Out in the back seat of my 60 Chevy

"Tonight’s the Night" - Neil Young

Bruce Berry was a working man
He used to load that Econoline van

"B Movie Box Car Blues" - Delbert McClinton (and covered by the Blues Brothers)

Hitched a ride in South Dakota
With two girls in a light blue DeSoto

Then there’s an old song that my Dad used to sing, which I guess he learned from his Dad, and which must have been popular when the Ford Model A was introduced (1928). Can’t find it on the internet, but here are some snippets I recall (to the tune of “Casey Jones”), :

*Henry Ford built a Model A
He thought he’d try it out on the new highway
He got it up to 50 and he lost his nerve
(Forgot to shut it off going 'round the curve)

He passed two Lincolns and a Cadillac too
Speedometer sitting on 72
As he passed them by you could hear him shout
“The dang thing’s in second and I can’t get it out!”*

Another old lyric my dad used to sing (which was from, I believe “Whoa, Mule”):

*Rich man rides in a Cadillac
Poor man in a train
Pa rides in a Model T
But he gets there just the same!

Whoa mule, you kickin’ mule
Whoa mule I say
Haven’t got time to kiss you now
My mule’s a runnin’ away!*

I can safely say that I am ashamed to know this, but…

From “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice,
“Rollin’ in my 5.0
With my rag-top down so my hair can blow”

Referring of course to a Mustang 5.0 convertible. How that man’s hair could move with the amount of gel in it that I remember I do not know, but…

Word to your mother.

At the risk of being flogged with a wet noodle, but I’ll put this down anyway since it’s such a big part of pop culture:

From “Those Were the Days” (“All In the Family” theme)

“Gee, our old LaSalle ran great!”

IDriving In My Car by Madness:
“It’s not quite a Jaguar…it says Morris on the door”

"Wishlist" - Pearl Jam

I wish I was a messenger and all the news was good
I wish I was the full moon shining off a Camaro’s hood

"One Step Up" - Bruce Springsteen
*
Went out and hopped in my old Ford
Hit the engine but she ain’t turnin’

"The Storms of Life" - Randy Travis

There’s a dirty piece of cardboard
that reads “Montgomery Ward”
taped across the window
of my old Ford

“It’s only right that I let the top drop on a drop top Porsche” - Kanye West
“See I’m 7-Trey Chevrolet dope rider” - Trick Daddy
“The kid that made that deserves that Maybach” - Kanye West
“I remember I couldn’t afford a Ford Escort” - Kanye West"
“They had the Lincolns and Auroras, we was hurtin’ them all” - Kanye West
“I want to be one 106 & Park pushing a Benz” - Kanye West
“In the Ferrai or Jaguar switching four lanes, with the top down, screamin’ out, ‘Money ain’t a thang’” - Jay-Z
“In what most would describe as a Rolls. No, that’s that Continental T”

“Cam got shot inside his Lambo” - the Game

This is too easy.
