Car insurance in NYC

So, as some of you may remember from this thread, I’m moving to NY.

My boyfriend and I are thinking that keeping the car, and using it, might make more sense than selling it or putting it in long-term storage. But before we make up our minds on this, I’d like to know how much insurance is going to cost me.

I’ve been told that the big, national companies will give you much higher rates than local businesses will. There seem to be tons of local insurance places to check out, though, and I really don’t want to spend tons of time calling each and every last one for a quote. For those of you who live in NYC and have cars–what insurance do you recommend? At least that’ll give me a place to start.

Thanks for any help you could give me with this.

Do you mind saying what you are paying now? I could throw out a number someone I know was paying in the early 90s but I don’t want to scare you.

I’m living in Ohio. At the moment, I get 6 months for $375. So far, the lowest rate quoted to me was about $1,550.

My car’s probably worth only a tiny bit more than $1,550 if I were to sell it now.

Having to decide what to do with the car is giving me a headache.

Unless you really need a car, I would sell it. Especially if that is $1550 for 6 months. Why would pay double the value of the car for a year of insurance?

I live in Manhattan and pay $105 a month with Geico. This is for a 2000 Subaru Legacy wagon, parked on the street, I don’t commute with it, no lien, discounts for age (44) and safe driving, I think. I don’t have the policy in front of me, but it’s not just a bare-minimum liability policy, either. Have you checked with Geico?

Hey, Mack.

No, I haven’t. Thanks for the tip!
