I’m trying to find a replacement remote entry key fob for my 2001 Mazda Protege, and all the websites mention something about “checking to make sure its FCCID matches my car’s”. How does one go about doing that?
If you still have the old remote, the FCC ID should be on the back. Otherwise: check with your mechanic, and get your remote from a place with a good return policy.
Sent a PM with a business website. (Because I wasn’t sure if I could link to them in the thread.)
The one I identified allows you to put the vehicle ID number (VIN) into their search engine so it’s possible it would be able to narrow down exactly which remote Reply needs.
Based on ebay search results, they used the same keyless entry fob for model years 2001-2005. They have an FCCID of KPU41704.

You need to make sure the IDs match so that the transmitter and receiver are compatible. For example, they may use different frequencies in other countries or for different model years. The FCCID is not unique to your particular VIN, only to that model of key fobs. The ID is issued for a particular transmitter design and will appear on all transmitters meeting that specification.
There will be a second process to synch the codes. This perhaps?:
Thank you all.
I ended up doing exactly that, jnglmassiv, but I just wonder if there’s a more authoritative source. Is there a primary-source FCC database somewhere where I can look type in a VIN and get back an FCCID?
The commercial websites I’ve seen do accept VINs, but they just show you the remote and ask you to buy it without providing an FCCIC, presumably because they don’t want you to go to a competitor.
