Career change

I’ve been studying systems science for a year now. It is a rather computer heavy programme, but I don’t mind that, because I’m a geek, and geeks thrive on computer stuff, right? Well, what I don’t thrive on is endless meetings and theoretical systems development which, sadly, systems science is also full of. There’s a strong focus on development theories and some such. Anyways, this isn’t what I really wanted to talk about. I’ve felt lately that I’m not really sure if I really want to work with this. I’ve also felt draw towards my old childhood dream, teaching. So, now I’d like to hear from doper teachers, how they perceive their profession and how they “do it”. I am primarily thinking about teaching computerstuff, english or swedish.

Thanks in advance.

I do computer stuff for a living. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone right now. They’re trying to send all of the computer stuff overseas, leaving just the meetings and paperwork in country. (this is probably true in Europe as well as the USA, but not certain).

I’d say go for teaching, which is a little harder to outsource.

Not that I want to burst your bubble, but these days in India, the place where all the computer stuff is being outsourced to, I’ve begun seeing quite a few ads looking for teachers in science subjects, for placement in most english speaking countries all over the world!

Well, since I was primarily thinking about teaching grades 7 to 9 or 10 to 12, I’m quite sure I wouldn’t have to worry about that type of “imported” teachers. I may not have been completely clear, but I live in Sweden, so the language most things are taught in is Swedish.

Thank you for your input, it is most appreciated.
