The thread I posted last night after the show is showing up empty. (Which explains why there have been no replies. I was starting to feel sad that no one liked my thread.) Anyway, I’ll try to capture my enthusiasm again for you.
I went to see his At Close Range tour last night, and I was positively blown away. This is the best show I’ve ever been to. Concerts included. He is so down to earth, he was signing autographs before the show! Funny doesn’t even begin to cover it. He was fucking hilarious. Plus he brought 4 comedians with him. OK 2 of those were Brad Williams and his brother Joseph. But they were still funny! After the show he announced that he would stay in the lobby and sign autographs and pictures for as long as there were still people there who wanted to meet him. :eek: How cool is that?
Long story short: Carlos will be a recipient of my hard earned cash anytime he tours in my area.
Well his show is mostly skit based with a monologue at the beginning. His stand-up show is well, all stand-up. The overall feel of the comedy is the same. Carlos is an Equal Opportunity Offender. His rule is make fun of everybody or make fun of nobody. I think it’s a good rule.
Got it. That style just doesn’t jibe with me. He’s way too “look at me and how offensive and clever I am!” Except that he’s not offensive (trying too hard) nor really clever (his jokes are very obvious). If I want that kind of comedy, David Chapelle does it with far more subtlety and class. But, to each their own. I also don’t like comedians that feel they have to scream at you to be funny. “DAH dah DUH!” Ugh.
I’m not a huge fan of Carlos Mencia. Chappelle did it better and funnier, but Mencia definitely does have his moments.
Put another on the board for not liking people yelling as their usual tone of voice.
I need to also say that I dislike Dane Cook, but that’s a hijack.
Well, it is a Carlos Mencia thread. I didn’t realize only positive reviews of his work were allowed here. I thought this was open for general discussion.
I did not know there was so much Carlos hate on this board. I watch a lot of comics, and I haven’t ever heard Carlos do a bit that I’ve seen another comic do. I’m not going to go search it out either. I don’t need any cites, I don’t want any links. I liked Carlos a whole lot, and since I’ve seen his live stand up show, I love him! That was the point of my OP.
Wait a minute! I would be a sham Doper if I didn’t point out that the idea is “fighting ignorance” (since 1973, at that). I’ve heard accusations before (from Joe Rogan, of all people) but haven’t seen proper proof, just hearsay and “Oh, that guy’s a joke thief.”
Well, it’s not hard to find plenty of examples. Do a youtube search for Carlos Mencia + steals. You’ll get lots of proof.
Here’s an example of him stealing a Bill Cosby joke, but not being anywhere near
as funny as Cosby. The man has no shame. None at all.
So, you started a thread to discuss a comedian you liked, then got irritated when it turns out that other people don’t like him? I would rather eat gravel than watch his show or his standup which is only improved by the fact that I’ve never watched it on purpose. His comedy relies on cheap, shallow, predictable potty humor about “non-controversial controversial” topics. I mean, what is up with all these beaners, yuck yuck yuck. Along with Dane Cook he’s an aggravating, self-absorbed prick who panders who other slackjawed idiots with the subtlety and wit of a belt-sander.
The fact that he steals jokes has been well-known for years. Unfortunately there’s a notorious lack of reputable, peer-reviewed sources for the “douchebag idiot comic joke record” database but if you honestly still need to be convinced you can spend ten minutes on youtube.
Well. I feel dirty. Thanks for the cursory tour through YouTube’s Mencia Hall of Shame. Highly recommended if you’re curious…any of them will do. Some are verbatim. Some are just generally plagiarized, but in the end, strangely, he was worse doing them all. That’s talent.
I haven’t seen mencia in person, but i have his comedy. Personally, i enjoy it. Oh… hes no carlin or hicks, but hes funny enough for me. The joke thief thing… It honestly doesn’t bug me. I listen to comedy to laugh. If i laugh, then its good, regardless of the source. Whatever happened is between the two artists to work out between themselves.
