The family and I are going on vacation to Virginia in two days. On the way back we’ll be traveling down I-85 through Charlotte, NC and then on to Atlanta. Does anyone here know of any good Carolina BBQ joints that fall along that route and that we could stop off at?
Local SDMBer doesn’t know Carolina BBQ is the name of a chain and not just any BBQ place in Carolina. Let us mock him.
Say what now?
oh no as far as I can find on google there are only two locations of the place called Carolina BBQ now I look like quite the fool. I have brought this upon myself for trying to mock others; I must accept my fate.
One of the local institutions is Spoon’s BBQ, but I haven’t been there since the old man died a couple of years ago.
Get off of I-85 at Exit 19A. This will put you on US 76 (Clemson Blvd.) headed towards the City of Anderson-By-God South Carolina. Go about three miles and on your left will be The Pompous Pig. It’s in a small shopping center across from Denny’s. Good brisket, and unlike many BBQ joints you can get a cold beer to go with your meal.
Petard, PSXer. PSXer, petard.
two food forums that may be of potential help:
A proper “Carolina” Barbecue place will not:
1 - be in South Carolina (They commit the mustard heresy)
2 - Serve brisket.
To the OP:
The I-85 corridor is a little tricky, since you run into Western NC Barbecue very quickly. If that’s what you’re looking for, I recommend Lexington Barbecue off the Business I-85 route just west of Greensboro.
For the good stuff though, I recommend Allan and Son which is off I-40 in Orange County. You can either take the NC-86 exit off I-85 (Exit 165) and head south for about 5 or 6 miles. It’s a little shack on the right. Or you can take the I-40 East exit (Exit 163) to New Hope Church Rd (Exit 263) Turn Left at the end of the ramp, then go a little less than a mile, turn right on NC-86, and it’s on the right after about a mile and a half.

But then what do you cal the state between North Carolina and South Carolina?
Confusion.
I can see it from my house. ![]()
The only Carolina is East Carolina.
That’s only because western NC was renamed paradise.
And Lexington #1 is The Holy Site.
I ate BBQ in Lexington. It was great.
You’ll be driving right through Greensboro, you should stop at Stamey’s. Either location is easy to get to from the interstate, and it’s damn fine eating. The idea of hush puppies with sandwich seemed odd at first, but it’s one of the things I miss most about living down there.
Yes. Allen and Son. Do call ahead though, as their hours can be weird. Also, most of these types of places are not open on Sundays.
Close the thread. This is really all you need to know.
