Carping fiosk: WTF?

I get ocular migraines from time to time, and had a minor event this morning. Thinking it was minor, I decided to go out for little walk. Came back home and saw something about the NY metro ticket machines on Facebook that I thought was amusing. So I went to answer it with “parking kiosk” and it came out “carping” (instead of ‘parking’), after some puzzlement. I thought I had it right, then struggled unsuccessfully to spell “kiosk”, coming out with “fiosk” several times, googled it without luck, puzzled for another minute then realized that carping was incorrect, as was the second word.

I went and laid down with my eyes closed for 15 minutes and things pretty much cleared up. Have any other OM sufferers also have had a sort of dyslexic (just had a hell of a time with that word, first spelling it “syslogic”) episode along with the migraine? Very disconcerting.

I get occasional OMs, but as far as I can recall I’ve never tried writing during an episode. I have experienced trouble reading. Besides the obvious inability to see the actual letters, I’ve had trouble forming the words.

Could be a TIA. Might want to put in a call to your doctor’s office.

I agree with Inna Minnit. This could have been a mini-stroke rather than just a migraine. See a doctor.

That can be a component of migraine aura, but with new symptoms that potentially troubling it could be a good idea to check with a doctor.

Decided to go to the ER. They did an EKG and a CT scan, both of which came up negative for stroke danger. They did find an old, small aneurysm that has calcified, and want me to consult with a neuro, which I’ll do, but the neuro told the ER doc that my symptoms were most likely all part of the ocular migraine aftermath. Anyway, that’s a relief for the most part, and I got to experience my first ER visit, first CT and first IV in 66 years. He also bumped up my aspirin dosage.

Thanks for the push on seeing somebody, as I was somewhat dismissive of the notion; better to be sure.

Glad it didn’t turn out to be anything more serious.

I don’t mix up letters, but I do mix up words. It’s often the first sign that I am getting a migraine.

You suffered a heavy burtation.

I have trouble reading, but my mom has verbal trouble when her oculars are happening. She slurs and says stuff backwards, like mixing up the verb and noun in a sentence. It was really disturbing when it first happened. But yeah, clears up within 15-20 minutes after the visual disturbance. She also had a neuro checkup when they started, all OK and just part of the migraine. Not relevant to you, but they stopped after she was fully in menopause. I’m hoping it will be the same for me!

Well, the neuro says there are two aneurysms, one at 4mm and one at 1.9mm. They usually don’t get excited unless they are 7mm or larger, but he’s recommended an MRI and consult with a neurosurgeon. I’ll get the MRI, but probably won’t agree to any sort of surgery. My blood pressure is under control and I don’t smoke.
