At some point in the late 90s/early 00s I was watching an interview clip with Trey Parker and Matt Stone in which they mention that after South Park first came out they eventually saw one day that there was a religious pamphlet that directly quoted Cartman’s character and, for each quote, provided a counter-quote from Jesus in the Gospels. They described it as “Cartman says this, but Jesus says this:”
It was obvious they had no idea what the name of the pamphlet was or which church/group printed it, which they didn’t care about anyways while recalling this funny thing, they just pointed out that “Once people started comparing Cartman to Jesus, we knew we had hit the big time!”
This is a Hell of a long shot (pun partially intended), but does anyone know what late 90s religious pamphlet it was that quoted Cartman and then provided counter-quotes by Jesus?
I’m guessing no, but in lieu of that, if you know of any religious pamphlets/material that directly references Cartman (not just South Park, but specifically the character Cartman) it would be fun to know. Thanks!
I don’t have an answer, but I think it’s funny how the LDS Church took out ad space in the Book of Mormon playbills saying something like “you’ve seen the play, now experience the church”
I can’t help but think that any religious tract that references Eric Cartman was probably drawn up by someone who never watched the cartoon, and just knows that Cartman was one of the more quotable/notorious characters.
I mean, anyone with a lick of sense knows that anything Cartman says or does is pretty much NOT what anyone reasonable should do, believe, or say.
The only time I can think Cartman would be quotable in a religious pamphlet is in Faith + 1 lyrics.
I wanna get down on my knees and start pleasing Jesus.
I wanna feel his sweet salvation all over my face!
Body of Christ
Sleek swimmer’s body, all muscled up and toned
Body of Christ
Oh what a body, I wish I could call it my own
Lord almighty, I’ve never been so enticed
Oh I wish I could have the body of Christ
