Does anyone else not like the Soap Opera Cartoons, where there is an On-Going Story Line. Star Wars, Transformers, Pokemon, etc.
What happened to Cartoons just being funny?

I don’t mind some of the story-line cartoons. Yu Yu Hakusho, and Ruroni Kenshin are two that UvulaDaughter and I like to watch together.
What I don’t like is when Cartoon Network gets halfway through a story arc and then abruptly cuts the series off, or moves it to the middle of the night, or starts the damn series over.
I like em both. I love “Inuyasha” and “Cowboy Bebop” but I also love “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” and Bugs Bunny cartoons.
Animation is a medium which should not restrict itself to one and only one genre. Otherwise you’d kill it and we’d be back in the crap pile that was the 80s.
You don’t only watch live action shows which are dramas or read books which are epics do you? People can do anything with anything and as long as they do it well it should be enjoyable, right? Personally I think animation desperately needs to expand its repetoire so people don’t automatically dismiss cartoons which aren’t funny and think that all animation is for children.
Agreed, Fern Forest. The idea that cartoons are only meant to be “funny, kids’-stuff” has been killing the medium for years.
If it wasn’t for the influence of Anime…well, animation’d be a lot worse off now, I think.
I like cartoons that tell a good story.
I also like the old-school cartoons of dog-cat-mouse beating the crap out of each other with pipes and anvils. Too bad 50 years of PC bullshit have gotten rid of that.
I really like Samurai Jack. A lot of episodes are rather repetitive (the same old “trying to get back to his own time but having some hitch at the last moment”) but later on there is a gradual sense things are moving along- befriending the Scotsman for example, also Jack’s reputation keeps getting bigger and bigger it seems.
I would like to see the Sam-rai (rapper guy who Jack ‘enlightened’). I really like reformed villans for some reason
