Casablanca airplane

Does anyone know what happened to the airplane that was used at the end of Casablanca?

It looked like a Lockheed “Electra”, but I’m not as familiar with pre-war civil aircraft as I am with other types. The registration was F_AMPJ. Since the film was shot in the U.S., I assume they just painted the French registration on it though, rather than actually getting a French-registered aircraft. (A nice touch, by the way. A lot of filmmakers would just keep the “N” number, hoping no one would notice.)

I happened to wander in on my parents watching a show called the antique roadshow – and one person happened to have the movie prop aircraft from the movie – so there is some person who owns it somewhere…

Thanks, kinoons; but are you sure it was the real aircraft? They also used models as special effects props.

Admit it…you love the show…i saw it today and they had Lawerence of Arabia’s wristwatch

I’m sure that http://www.imdb.com has the definitive answer, but IIRC, then the aircraft was a 1/3 scale model. The people walking around the aircraft are, again IIRC, are not real sized people, but the director’s children.

As a snopsian, I can offer this

So the actual aircraft may be owned by Disney? Somehow that doesn’t seem surprising. Since there are records of the plane that Disney can get from the FAA, it’s history can be traced. I wonder if there are any records (rental receipts, etc.) that would confirm whether Disney’s plane was actually used in the movie?

Thanks for the answer!

The one I saw was the prop used for external shots of the aircraft – about 1/12 size or so – not the full size aircraft

The “airport crew” in the final scene weren’t children, they were midgets hired to make the thing look more authentic.
