Has anyone heard of the concept of Cascadia, thought up as a unique country consisting of southwestern BC, as well as Washington and Oregon?
I believe the idea is that these geographical areas have a somewhat unique society that is not pandered to by current national governments either economically or representatively.
I haven’t heard anything about it since I saw a movie on it in grade 10 (4 years ago).
Well, “Cascadia” is an environmental bioregion. That is, portions of the Pac NW (BC, WA, and OR) share a common flavor of climate, topography, and weather. As such it is know as Cascadia to ecologists, environmentalists and greenies.
It’s also called Cascadia by many folks to differentiate it from the US Pacific Northwest or the Canadian Pacific Southwest–that is, to refer to the region without reference to national or state borders, and also to differentiate it fromt he rest of the inland west (the high desert of Eastern WA and OR and Idaho).
But the “Sovreign Nation of Cascadia?” Never heard of it. My guess is that it’s a radical-left pipedream even less feasable than an independent Texas and as ludicrous in concept as the Nation of Deseret.
I don’t see any portion of the US seceeding in my lifetime. Hell, Quebec still hasn’t managed to seceed from Canada, and everybody wants them to leave. (That was a joke. Really.)
Ironically, when the whole “Sovereign Republic of Texas” debacle hit the news a couple of years ago, Texas had just launched a new P.R. campaign to boot tourism. The P.R. campaign’s slogan? “Texas: It’s Like a Whole Other Country”!
