Well, considering I had to google “China Arnold” just to know what you were talking about, I’d say no. Yes, I’ve heard of the microwave baby, but no way that is as big as Casey Anthony.

I apologize for not clarifying that my comment was a sarcastic one. It was meant to highlight the disparity between media coverage of white/black crime by giving a current example.

I just don’t see what race has to do with this case. A mother killing her child and feeling no remorse is in and of itself fascinating. So far we have no evidence of drugs or anything affecting their thinking. Unlike Ms. Arnold, we have been given no indication that the mother was intoxicated.

And, yes, I’d heard about the microwave baby case, too. I didn’t even know the ethnicity of the woman, but I know I find the pool story more fascinating.

I think we need a new Godwin’s-style law that says that in any thread involving any sensationalized murder case, someone will inevitably say that it’s because the person involved is white (thereby implying that bad, bad, eeeevil raaaaaayyyycist America only cares about bad shit when it happens to white people and not anybody else.)

You’re missing the point. I didn’t say it was being treated as a big story because a white person killed a white child. This is about PrettyWhiteGirls. PrettyWhiteGirls are a protected class. A national obsession. Go look at a magazine rack in a grocery store. Who’s looking back? PrettyWhiteGirls. Probably some attractive black women, of course. Maybe some beautiful Hispanic females. But you can make a news story out of a PrettyWhiteGirl doing anything. Getting engaged! Beach wedding! Pregnant! Movie premiere! Dinner with a friend… or hot couple alert?! And if that’s news, then a PrettyWhiteGirl having something bad done to her is twice the story. A PrettyWhiteGirl doing something terrible? Well that’s news cycle after news cycle. (The US is obviously not alone in this, of course. I seem to recall some story last month from the UK… a PrettyWhiteGirl got married, and it was a national holiday. Married, coincidentally, to the son of a PrettyWhiteGirl, whose death was a national capital-T Tragedy). How on earth could a PrettyWhiteGirl do something like that? PrettyWhiteGirls in America have the whole world laid out in front of them. Now she’ll never be able teach private yoga classes in the Hamptons… marry a real estate developer… pop out babies and add more PrettyWhiteGirls to the population. An American tragedy. Practically Shakespearean.

I just happen to think that, if the media gave some of those other stories a chance, the audience would become engaged, it just might take them a little longer to come around. Maybe that’s Polyanna of me, though.

That horrible case in Texas, for example? There was plenty of interest in that, but, in comparision to ‘When White Mothers Go Bad’, not a lot of coverage.

What racial identity has to do with the case is how much is reported.
‘Nice’ white females murdering, being murdered, or just disappearing gets press; peope of color or ‘low moral character’ do not.

I never heard about the Atlanta child murders until someone was arrested.
I don’t know anyone else who was aware of the working girls being killed in southern New England a couple of decades ago.
And I never heard about the woman and child in Rochester. Did you?

I can’t see why it’s interesting, at least with JonBenet Ramsey you had a bit of a mystery element involved. (OK unless you assume it’s Patsy, John or Burke). Or with that little kid in Portland who was never found.

The thing that cheeses me off is no matter how bad it is, the woman won’t get punished as bad as if she was a man. If it were her father instead of her mother, he’d be headed for the death chamber. It’s pretty likely, if found guilty she’ll get life.
