There are many characters either yet to be introduced or who’ve been introduced but yet to become major who could be recast. Feel free to recast an already cast role.
My picks:
Stannis Barratheon: Mark Sheppard, recently seen as Crowley on Supernatural for those who watch that show. He has the right arrogance and that twinkle he gets as Crowley could be contained.
Davos Seaworth: Russell Crowe. I’m pretty sure he’d be unavailable pricewise, but then we’re not really submitting a list for consideration.
Melisandre: Sophia Milos. I’m not that familiar with her acting but it’s how I picture her.
Jacquen Hazar: Ghassan Massoud, best known perhaps for Saladin in Kingdom of Heaven
Brienne of Tarth stumps me. Such a shame Diane Delano is too old for the part; she’s a bit too attractive age but could be “uglied up”.
Of course a quick google shows I’m far from the only person who pictured Patrick Stewart for Tywin Lannister.
Really good one. Also looks a lot like Mark Addy (except younger and slimmer obviously) who played Robert. Plus HBO should have his number from when he was on DEADWOOD.
I can see that; I could see him as Craster as well. I pictured David Thewliss as Bolton because for some reason I can see him as a leeching addict.
Ron Perlman is almost a shoe-in to play some Wildling. Or perhaps Qorin Halfhand.
Littlefinger was well cast in the series, but I keep picturing him played by Christopher Guest in the books.
Physically spot-on, although I don’t know if Sheppard has the range to hit that holier than thou tone that Stannis has. I’m a huge fan of Sheppard any time I see him, but he’s got a comfort zone that I haven’t seen him stretch beyond. For some reason, the image I had of Stannis was that of Charles Widmore in LOST, as played by Alan Dale. But Dale is way too old to play Robert’s younger brother.
This might be a tricky role to cast - when he first appears, Stannis seems like a one-dimensional self-righteous prick. But as the series goes on, he develops in some very interesting directions that will be challenging to play to.
I’m thinking someone more along the lines of Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond from LOST, or maybe Adrien Brody for Davos. Russel Crowe is a bit too… the word stout comes to mind. I see Davos as a bit more wiry than Crowe could manage, even if he took off the pounds, since Davos was a smuggler before Stannis knighted him, and I don’t imagine him as the burly type that Crowe typically plays.
Um. Wow. I didn’t exactly picture Melisandre as completely smokin’ hot, but Ms. Milos can have any role she wants.
Nailed it. His is exactly the face I had in mind when I read the book - and as an actor, Massoud is definitely capable of nailing this role.
Yeah, this will be a tough one. Given Brienne’s stature and the dearth of actresses built like linebackers, I anticipate that HBO will cast some unknown, maybe a female athlete - but I really doubt they will be casting someone as homely as the book describes, even if they find a capable, fugly-enough actress.
Umm, Tywin’s already appeared in Season 1, played by Charles Dance, even though I can’t recall him being in the first book. Although I’d pictured him as more of a Terence Stamp sort, I think Dance has made the role his own so far.
I saw Craster as a lot smaller than Perlman - although Perlman definitely has the face, and the range to play him. The first actor that popped into my head to play him was Andy Serkis but he’s going to be a bit busy with The Hobbit.
Craster controls an isolated homestead, and terrorizes what seems like dozens of women and girls, all by himself in the wastes beyond the world. I never imagined him as anything other than a huge, hulking man.
To each his own, I guess - I envisioned him as more of a bully than anything else. Strong, sure, but not much more than average. He ruled his wives/daughters through threats and intimidation, but there was a reason that he sacrificed all his infant sons - he didn’t want the competition.
True. He usually plays… well, Crowley: charming and amoral smartass.
Actually I read somewhere- how’s that for a cite?- that he was considered for Tywin. I don’t know if he didn’t get it or wasn’t interested, but he’d have made a good one. He was great on Ugly Betty.
On Youtube there are several videos of people doing the Sylvio Forel lines from Game of Thrones. They date back to over a year ago and are pretty clearly from actors wanting to audition for the role.
Dot Jones from GLEE would be perfect for Brienne except she’s about 10 years too old. I wonder if she has gym friends she could recommend. (You can’t tell in that picture but she’s all muscle; she was women’s world armwrestling champion several years running.)
Yeah, but they’ll go for acting ability first. Armor and costume covers any lack of physique and they can cheat six inches of height pretty easily with cheap, old-school camera tricks – that is if they even care to. Her height isn’t that important, when they can just wag her strength and sword skills.
I thought about this possibility too - but so much of Brienne’s personality is shaped by others’ reactions to her size and her overall appearance, I think they would either need to downplay that aspect of her in the TV show (and ruin a very interesting character) or use production cheats that might be obvious to the avid viewer.
Either way they go, I’ll put money on the likelihood that they will not cast a truly ugly person - in the books, Brienne isn’t just plain, she’s lantern-jawed, thick of neck, and small of chest. All qualities that will be pretty hard to find outside of female bodybuilding.
Well, since it looks like Camelot is a goner i think Eva Green would make a perfect Melisandre. Girl is certainly not shy about showing the goods either, which is definitely a plus in this show.
