Hi SD,
I’ve seen on Youtube many videos of Broadway songs being professionally recorded in a studio for cast recordings. You have the main actors/actresses and the backup singers singing into a microphone in an acoustically appropriate room.
How do they deal with dancing? I was listening to the Newsies cast recording CD the other day, and it’s a very dance heavy show (tap and otherwise). There are a lot of dance breaks, where you as a listener can hear the tap steps being done against the orchestral accompaniment, and also the “Come on!” “Yeah!” “Let’s go!” interjections by the principal cast during the tap solos. These interjections would conceivably be awkward without the dancing that goes with it. Do they record these in a studio as well, or on stage? I would think there wouldn’t be room for a whole dance number in a studio. But then again, if this was recorded on a stage during a “dress rehearsal” then would it sound as polished as it does?
The recording I have makes you feel as if you’re listening at an actual show. So where is the recording done?
Thanks,
Dave
