Castles, culture and damn good beer...PragueDope anyone?

Yes, I am finally able and willing to organize a PragueDope! Who is interested?

I was thinking sometime in September or October when the season is sorta over and prices come down (plus it gives us time to plan for it, international travel and all).

Here is a good pension that I have used many times before for travellers. Good rates, clean and has around 8 rooms to rent with breakfast. It is a tiny bit out of the way, about a 5 minute walk from a tram stop, then 4 tram stops to Dejvicka Metro. It would take you 30 minutes to leave the door and be standing in Old Town Square, which really isn’t bad, and the castle is a 20 minute walk from it. Plus the trustworthy taxi service (AAA taxi) can spirit you to and from for around US$5 a trip to most places downtown. I have also walked from downtown to it (I lived nearby) in under an hour. Oh, there are a few restaurants nearby as well, so food won’t be a problem.

Flights from London Stansted are around 100GBP round-trip. From the US? No clue. There is a new route direct to Amsterdam as well (Coldfire? Hmmm???).

I’ve lived here for 7 years now and have yet to see all of the sights of Prague. There are literally hundreds of choices on a daily basis- from Jazz clubs to museums to concert halls to ;j cemeteries to kickin’ dance clubs to ??? There will never be a dull moment, I promise! Plus there are plenty of things to do within a short train hop from Prague to fairy-tale castles and churches made of human bones and all other sorts of stuff. I assume a few nights would be started at a pub and end up at a club, and if we are lucky, a good band will be in town. Plus we can go retro and dance to 80’s music on mass quantities of beer, or catch a rave and reach for the lights. The choices are, as mentioned, endless.

What say y’all? Chcete jet do Prahy?

Hey, this is a most excellent idea! I’ve never made it to Prague yet, and I’d love to. By that time, the lovely Heloise will be in Europe as well. Also, there is a certain Doper coming over to Europe for a holiday around that time, and I know for a fact Prague is on their list. I’m speaking in anonymous terms because I’m not sure whether they want this revealed, but maybe they’ll pop by.

At any rate, sure, count me in. The only conflicting thing might be a one week trip to Istanbul my wife and me will undertake around that time as well, so we’ll have to see about that.

Headed for Austria beginning of December, but I’m flexible. How flexible are you on your date? (I know it’s gonna be Winter and driving will be hazardous, but December looks like the next opportunity for me to fly across the pond).

I would love to meet you and Coldfire, and other Euro-Dopers, so I will monitor this thread.

Thanks

I’d be totally up for it but I’ll be starting University in September so chances are slim. :frowning: I’ll let you know though, if I can find time off. It sounds super.

Ooohh… Sounds interesting. I should be able to afford it as well…

Wow, great timing! Prague has long been on my list of cities to visit. I decided last week to visit Prague this fall. And better yet, Canadians no longer require a visa to visit the Czech Republic (yay for the EU!).

The only thing is that I can’t make it over before at the very least October 21st or so (I have a concert to attend October 17th, believe it or not. Sheesh. I’m beginning to have second thoughts.)

The weekend of October 21st would be great. Hee, don’t you love it when the foreigners make their own demands?

I can’t believe the timing! This is excellent.

It seems like it might be fun, but I’m not sure whether I could make it in fall.

(maybe pushing this thread back up will attract a few other Eurodopers)

I feel an Amsterdam carpool coming up.

When I read the title, I was so in. But that was when I thought it would be during the summer. As it is, I’ll have to pass.

Fakt jo! Hell, I wish I could make it. Hell, I might start pricing airfare.

OK, so far we have a buy-in for Oct. 21 and sometime in December…plus a few who seem to be able to make it whenever.

Would August be better for people time-wise? It will just be a bit more expensive for airfare and hotels.

We could do 2…Summer and fall. I’m here afterall…

Thoughts?

If you can make it an annual event, we might be able to make it for 2005 or 2006. We’ve been talking recently about different places we’d like to visit, and Prague is definitely on the list. Unfortunately, this fall doesn’t work for us budget-wise.

August would work for me. How long are we talking about? I need to get my finances in order.

August just might work. I have time off and can get to Prague and back on my frequent flier miles.

I hear a few votes for August…

How about August 20-22?

Vote please! We can do another one later for those who cannot make it in the summer.

Well, seeing as I would in such a case favour the October one (w/ Heloise and Globetrotter), count me out for an August one, lovely as though the weather will be, I’m sure. But you’re right, there’s no reason why you can’t have two.

August will be out for me too. :frowning:

As for October, as long as its a weekend, and not the week of the 4th…

God, I can’t please anyone!!!

OK, October 21-ish. Come if you can. Let me know if you need help arranging the pension.

August 20-ish. Come if you can. Let me know if you need help arranging the pension.

December-ish. Come if you can. We’ll drink lots of hot spiced wine and complain about the weather!

So, two small dopefests, not one big one.

This work?

I’d be definately interested. Put me on a mailling list. So **Coldfire ** and Heloise, that’s one more for your Amsterdam carpool. Although, last time I went to Prague, (SPLENDID city!) there were busrides (with various stops in the Netherlands and Germany) that offered a really good deal.

October 21-ish, December-ish, both would work for me.

Works for me.

Woohoo! I love European Dopefests.
