Condolences.
I lost a cat that way a couple years ago. Fine as could be when I left for work…curled up in his favorite chair, stiff as a board when I got home. I think he had a brain aneurysm or something.
I’m so sorry. Been there, done that far too many times myself, but in all the years I’ve had cats, I wouldn’t change a thing, then or now.
And as Sarah-Jane Smith once said, ‘some things are worth getting your heart broken for.’
Cats are pretty durned high on that list.
Very sad to hear about your kitty. It does sound like she went peacefully, though, and that’s all any of us can really ask for. Sorry for your loss feels lame to say, but I mean it.
A month later and I’m still getting used to not seeing my little Max standing at the door when I come home.

According to necropsy, it was a probable stroke
Actually it may have been HCM in some of your beloved kitties. It is something that most cat owners don’t even know about and a major silent cat killer. Which is why I’m sharing this. I know alot about it first hand. My cat, Neon Shadow Cat died from it. I started an awareness site on facebook while he was still alive and started really seeing the reality of it. I still cry…not just for him, but it’s killing alot of cats and so many people have no idea. It can occur in any cat and is being researched in several breeds. Purebreds are easier to research because their heredity is easy to trace and readily available. Good breeders are testing their breeding cats on a regular basis and altering any positive cats.
What is it? It’s a hereditary heart disease. It causes their heart walls to thicken until it just can’t pump or they throw a clot or die of Congestive heart failure. Many just drop dead of a sudden stroke or heart attack. That’s what Neon did… Neon was sleeping. He woke up suddenly and came to bed and cuddled between me and the cat who he thought was his cat mom for about 15 minutes. Then he got up and climbed into my arms and dropped dead. He was 5.5 years old.
They also die from blood clots. They are also sudden and extremely painful.
There are tests and medications they can take. The test can’t be done by a regular vet. They can suspect HCM, but have to send you to a cardiologist for confirmation and treatment. If you catch it early your cat can sometimes have a fairly normal life.
Neon wasn’t acting right and his weight dropped down to 6 pounds. The vet suspected HCM which was confirmed a month later. It was advanced and his cardiologist gave him maybe 3 years. I got his weight up to 9.25 pounds and he was doing very well. He took several medications (all thankfully inexpensive). He was a Sphynx (hairless cat) and I could actually see his messed up blood flow on his neck as a constant reminder. I spoiled him rotten and did my best to make him as happy as possible.
He went for his 2nd appointment a year later and the trip nearly killed him. They drained fluid from his lungs and it didn’t look good. The cardiologist admitted that he had maybe a few weeks. Neon showed improvement and hung in there for 3 months (we had a deal regarding Thanksgiving. He died a few days after).
Without testing for it can catch you totally without warning. your cat just suddenly dies. If your cat dies suddenly if you have any of their family you might ask your vet to check their heart.
If your pet cat isn’t altered get it done. There are so many mixed breed cats out there right now that are dying from this thing. It has to stop and not breeding untested cats is a major step. Some cats are carriers and never show it, but their young can have it. I have Neon’s sister. So far she is has been lucky and I hope she stays that way.
Right now several research facilities are working for a cure. They are real close to identifying the responsible gene.
I hope you don’t mind all this…but I love my cats and I’m sure you love yours. Knowledge is our biggest power and for Neon I try and tell as many people as possible.
