Cat litter box problem

Big cat, little litter box (actually, standard size litter box). But sometimes his butt sticks out over the edge of the box, and he pees on the rug. His little pea brain doesn’t seem to notice.

I think he’s too big (17 lbs) for a covered box.

Do I put something waterproof on a perimeter surrounding the box? That’s kind of disgusting…

Do I get a deeper box? Would it then be too high for him to get in? Do I add a little ramp for him to get in and out? Cut a door in the side like an old person’s bathtub?

I’d say bigger box.

Do this with the biggest bin you can possibly fit/tolerate.

ETA: Oh, and do pay attention to where they recommend choosing one with the smoothest sides. If the bin’s inner surface has a rough texture to the plastic, look for something smoother.

Perhaps put his box inside another, so that he can only get into the inside box, and when he misses it shall be caught by the outside box.

Thanks,Voltaire – so basically, it’s the old persons’ bathtub. Should work.

I use a plastic storage box that’s about 30" by 20", maybe 6" tall. It’s worked out fine for my 22 pound male.
